The Department of Human Development and Family Studies, College of Human Environmental Sciences at The University of Alabama, seeks applicants for an Assistant/Associate Professor, tenure-track appointment. Sought are applicants with a promising record of research and teaching in the field of early childhood education and/or early child development and early learning. Desirable areas of expertise include early literacy, early STEM learning, early childhood curriculum evaluation, early childhood assessment, school readiness, high quality childcare, or other specializations or research areas in early care and education.

 

The successful candidate will have a reduced teaching load to facilitate the responsibility of initiating, conducting, and publishing research along with writing and submitting grant applications or procuring internal and external funding, and the candidate will be responsible for: teaching undergraduate courses, including methods courses in the early childhood education major and teacher certification track (Pre-Kindergarten: Birth To Age 4); advising undergraduate students; mentoring graduate students in research; and engaging in service at the campus, community, state, and/or national level. Successful candidates also will support the department’s initiatives in distance education with online instruction. The early childhood education program in The Department of Human Development and Family Studies strives to honor children by preparing teacher candidates to engage in reflective practice as well as developmentally effective, culturally responsive, and constructivist pedagogies. We seek a colleague who shares our commitment to young children and to excellent teacher preparation.

 

While this position primarily involves the teacher preparation of undergraduate teacher education candidates, opportunities to teach at the graduate level may be available. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with teacher candidates, local early childhood programs and settings, and our campus and community partners in early childhood development, learning, and intervention. Research, scholarly activity, and service are required performance criteria determining the potential for tenure and promotion.

 

Qualifications

 

  1. A doctorate in Human or Child Development and Family Studies or Early Childhood Education or an equivalent field. Candidates who are ABD (all but dissertation) may apply.
  2. Evidence of scholarly work, including a strong research record, professional publications/presentations and/or participation in grant submissions or success at grant funding
  3. Strong interpersonal skills, including effective oral and written communication skills
  4. Teaching experience in higher education
  5. Classroom teaching experience in early childhood education (i.e., preschool or elementary) and a strong familiarity of birth to PreK settings (infant, toddler, and preschool contexts)
  6. Educator certification applicable to early childhood (e.g., inclusive early childhood education, early childhood special education, preschool to grade three [P-3], K-6 elementary education, birth through kindergarten [B-K]), with preferred emphasis on birth to age five
  7. Knowledge of NAEYC Higher Education Standards and Accreditation, Quality Rating Improvement System, and experience with edTPA
