DESCRIPTION: At this profound moment of societal change, the need for policy analysis is critical to conversations about educational transformation, equity and opportunity. The University of Pittsburgh School of Education seeks a new faculty colleague with a focus on Education Policy, at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level (in the tenure stream). We seek applicants who conduct policy-relevant research that tackles critical questions related to equity and justice in education. We welcome applicants who draw on various methodological approaches and theoretical perspectives to engage in research that (1) explores the transformational capacities of education – as shaped by policy – for the least-advantaged populations; (2) investigates the ways in which educational policies, programs, or power structures may disrupt, reify or exacerbate inequities for learners across the life cycle; and/or (3) evaluates the efficacy, feasibility, and resource uses and allocations associated with policy solutions that affect educational quality and disrupt persistent inequalities in educational opportunities, experiences, and outcomes. We invite scholars who investigate the interplay between policy and systemic power relationships drawing on knowledge traditions such as, but not limited to, critical race theory, critical policy studies, and ethnic studies. Additionally, we welcome scholars focused on a variety of policy topics as well as those who work at the intersection of education and other policy domains, such as health, housing, and transportation. We seek a colleague who is committed to equity, justice and antiracism in their teaching and advising practices and who centers educational praxis in their service, at the University, community and national levels. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of and training within new master’s and doctoral (Ph.D. and Ed.D.) programs in Education Policy within the Department of Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy.
The candidate would join the School of Education at a time of great excitement and action, particularly related to our commitments to equity and justice. Our mission-vision guides our work as a school, and we aim to determine sustainable ways to disrupt long-standing patterns of inequity in education. The School of Education recently has reorganized into three primary areas: Health and Human Development; Teaching, Learning, and Leading; and Educational Foundations, Organizations, and Policy (EFOP). We value collaborative work that is not constrained by rigid boundaries but that is committed to interconnections among departments and centers. Thus, the successful candidate will have a primary affiliation in EFOP and can also be cross-appointed within another department. The School also offers opportunities to partner with substantively focused centers (e.g., Center for Urban Education, Community Engagement Centers, Healthy Lifestyle Institute, International Institute for Studies in Education, Office of Child Development), with other partners at the University, and in various regional, national, and global communities.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates will have an earned doctorate in education policy or a closely related field; an established or emerging record of publication in peer-reviewed journals; demonstrated experience or promise in securing external grant funding as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator; demonstrated experience or promise for teaching graduate-level courses in education policy and analysis; demonstrated experience or promise in advisement and mentoring of students at the master’s and doctoral levels; and demonstrated experience or promise in engaging with local, national and/or global communities.
