General Summary/Purpose

The Research Specialist will coordinate the operationsof the Kuchibhotla lab and will be expected to functionmostlyindependently in both administrative and research capacities. This position will contribute to the scientific research interests of the lab byhelping to design experiments, presenting at lab meetings, performing data analysis, and contributing to data interpretation, manuscript preparation and publishing. This position will manage independent projects involving a broad range of technical expertise. This position requires a thorough understanding of scientific principles, and the ability to read and synthesize the literature in order to help in the design of new experiments, and use of advanced techniques in the lab. This position will help onboarding, training, and assisting lab personnel including postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduate students, and other research personnel.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Daily Lab Operations and Management

•Collaborate with PI to oversee scientific and daily management of the lab
•Review experiments and animal usage with members of lab to ensure efficient utilization of resources
•Execute on existing operating policies and exercise judgment in the resolution of operational problems
•Administer lab protocols
•Manage physical space of the lab
•Lab management is professional, efficient, and in compliance with established University guidelines
•Adheres to the scientific mission of the lab
•Utilizes available resources to effectively resolve problems

•Keeps PI informed of status of projects and clearly communicates next steps, risks, and issues

Collaborate with Sr. Instrument Designer and PI to ensure that experiments and apparatus meet budgetary restrictions

Scientific Research and Reporting

  • Track the progress and provide support for independent research projects in collaboration with PI
  • Develop and validate behavioral assays for sensorimotor tasks
  • Perform computational analyses of large-scale imaging data
  • Responsible for management and analysis of experimental data
  • Prepare oral and written reports using analyzed data
  • Effectively implements scientific methods after careful thought and consideration
  • Computational technologies are implemented after thorough investigation and study
  • Demonstrates ability to accurately collect data and judge the reasonableness of the results
  • Raw data is organized and managed in accordance with established lab protocols
  • Data is analyzed in a timely manner; properly applies concepts and formulas related to scientific results
  • Presentations are professional and adhere to established norms in the field

Present findings at lab meetings and professional conferences

Equipment and Records Management

  • Manage the inventory and equipment for the lab
  • Update and maintain biosafety-related documentation
  • Compile, update, and maintain working list of vendors and suppliers for lab equipment and consumables
  • Monitor equipment performance, maintain equipment maintenance agreements, and preventive maintenance schedules
  • All records are kept current
  • Equipment is maintained in good working order; preventive maintenance and/or repairs are scheduled as needed
  • Inventories of consumable supplies are maintained in an organized and orderly manner; supplies are replenished before stocks are depleted

Animal Care and Use

•Maintain inventory of mouse colony
•Establish appropriate crosses, tagging, and genotyping of mice
•Harvest mouse tissue for experiments
•Assist trained personnel as needed with animal care and handling tissues
•Inventory of mouse colony is current and accurate
•Works collaboratively with Research Animal Resources as needed to maintain healthy colony
•All ACUC protocols are followed when animal surgeries are performed
•All ACUC protocol documentation is current and accurate

Compliance and Training

  • Oversee initial training of new lab members in standard lab procedures (safety, equipment, animal)
  • Ensure that lab is in compliance with all relevant and applicable safety policies and protocols
  • New lab members are trained on all applicable safety procedures as soon as possible
  • Changes in requirements are shared with all members of the lab and implemented as soon as possible
  • Safety compliance measures are implemented immediately

Administrative Tasks

•Initiate SAP and/or p-card transactions to order supplies; ensure all purchases are allowable and allocable.
•Maintain lab records
•Communicate with Department administrative staff to resolve administrative questions
•Appropriate SAP or p-card transactions are initiated to order supplies and/or services for lab
•Follows established administrative policies for Department and/or University
•Records are maintained in accordance with established policies
•Communications and interactions with Department and other offices are professional

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field.
  • One year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years’ experience in comparable lab performing relevant techniques preferred.
  • Published manuscript based on data gathered using behavioral approaches is preferred.
  • Strong background in neuroscience preferred if degree is in related field.
  • Experience with high-throughput automated behavioral systems for rodents and two-photon imaging in the auditory cortex preferred.

Experience with histology including use of immunohistochemistry preferred.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills, and a high degree of professionalism are imperative. Ability to draw on experience and collaborative resources to make informed decisions regarding key issues in the lab. Experience with and ability to follow through on independent research projects in keeping with the scientific goals of the lab required. Ability to provide constructive guidance for all members of the lab. Ability to coordinate lab administration. Knowledge of and experience working with lab equipment and techniques; must have experience working in an animal research lab. Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously, often exercising independent judgement. Must be able to manage and analyze data. Must be able to draft and write scientific manuscripts.

Computer and Software Skills: Matlab, ImageJ, Suite2P, MS Office Suite; basic email software; SAP helpful, but not required; GraphPad

Lab Machines and Equipment: two-photon imaging, head-fixed mouse behavior, cranial window surgeries, virus injections, optogenetics, histology.
