Position Function

Responsible for environmental program management, compliance and training throughout the University.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree in public or environmental health, environmental, hazardous materials or chemical management, biological sciences, or related field from an accredited college or university. Or, in lieu of degree listed, a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university along with an additional four years of experience in environmental management, public health, laboratory or hazardous materials safety.

Minimum Experience

Three years of experience in environmental management, public health, laboratory or hazardous materials safety.

Minimum Other

Working knowledge of programs related to environmental, health, and safety; must possess a valid driver’s license and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy. Ability to wear respiratory protection, necessary PPE, and work with hazardous and infectious materials.

Authorization to work in the US

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Professional certifications including one or more of the following: CCMM, CCHO, REHS, CIH, and/or FEMA Emergency Response. Qualified Environmental Professional under CERCLA and ASTM standards for environmental due diligence. 40-hour HAZWOPER site safety and 8-hour HAZMAT supervisor training.

Job Duty

Plan and formulate environmental health and safety plans and policies in the areas of Chemical Hygiene, Hazard Communication, Biosafety, Laser Safety, Radiation Dosimetry, Chemical and Hazardous Waste Management, Controlled Substances Compliance, and Spill Prevention and Response – including plan distribution, training and communications.

Job Duty

Serve as a resource to the campus on matters of laboratory safety and environmental compliance. Perform periodic documented inspections of laboratory spaces (including eyewash and fume hood inspections) to ensure safe operating conditions. Provide training and serve on related committees.

Organize hazardous waste pickups. Prepare and submit reports to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations. Inspect hazardous waste accumulation areas as required.

Develop and maintain natural gas operator plans, underground utility protection programs, and storm water permitting and pollution and storm water prevention activities. Provide shop training for underground utilities and the use of leak detection and monitoring equipment.
