Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU’s Massey Cancer Center is seeking qualified candidates for a Bioinformatics Specialist. The Bioinformatics Specialist will join the collaborative effort, being led by Massey Cancer Center, to support translational research efforts through the discovery of molecular biomarkers, new diagnostic and prognostic algorithms, and the identification of potential drug targets. This position will provide services focused on the analysis of high-dimensional data sets being generated by genomics and other technologies. As VCU continues to expand its uses of large heterogeneous data sets, this position will work directly with VCU researchers to transform data into knowledge that can be utilized across multiple disciplines.

Minimum Hiring Standards

-M.S. in computational or biological sciences with computational and programming experience or equivalent training and experience.
-Experience in performing bioinformatics analysis on omics data using public/commercial software packages and data resources.
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
-Must be familiar with one or more of the following: Python, R, Bash, PERL, HTML, JAVA, XML, SQL, C, C++.

-Ability to manage tasks and projects with little or no supervision.
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team in an interdisciplinary environment.
-Demonstrated communication skills through multiple mediums such as email, in-person/oral presentation, written, etc.
-Must have high ethics standards.
-Willingness and ability to learn new skills independently.
-Ability to solve/complete routine-to-complex issues/tasks/projects independently.
-Knowledge in the use of statistical methodologies.
-Working knowledge of scientific principles and concepts within a biomedical research environment.
-Ability to develop and publicly release bioinformatics pipelines, algorithms, or applications with appropriate documentation.

Preferred Hiring Standards

M.S. in Computer Science, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics preferred
