Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Massey Cancer Center is seeking applicants for a Lab Specialist. This position is key personnel in all major aspects of research projects within the laboratory of Dr. Robert Winn, Massey Cancer Center. This position is heavily focused on animal procedures in a basic science laboratory that studies the genetic alterations in the development of lung cancer. Responsibilities include animal experiments in a murine lung tumor model, basic animal breeding/husbandry, laboratory administrative responsibilities related to animals (e.g. IACUC protocols and detailed animal inventory spreadsheets), and training lab personnel. The individual will work as a team member whose aim is to complete the goals outlined in the principal investigator’s research proposals which are to understand the molecular basis by which oncogenes and tumor suppressors regulate transformed cell progression in mouse tumor models of lung cancer, and to use this information to develop novel therapeutic treatments.

Minimum Hiring Standards

Bachelor’s of Science in Biology or equivalent training and experience

Minimum 3 years animal handling experience

Familiarity with mouse colony management of multiple strains

Excellent verbal and written communication skills required

Able to work collaboratively and collectively in a diverse work environment

Able to multitask on multiple projects

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

Proficient in animal handling techniques which include intraperitoneal injections, intratracheal injections, tail-vein injections, subcutaneous injections, organ isolation, and animal imaging

Proficient in basic molecular biology research techniques which include DNA / RNA /Protein extractions, genotyping, immunoblotting, PCR -RT and QPCR, immunohistochemistry, etc.
