About the Position:

We seek to hire a fair-minded professional who can relate well with people from a rich diversity of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds, to lead the development and implementation of strategic and proactive initiatives to increase diversity at all levels and to advance equity, inclusion, and belonging in the College of Engineering. The successful candidate will exemplify excellence in individual achievement as well as in collaboration, to guide and coordinate efforts within the College in compliance with Affirmative Action, Equal Employment Opportunity, and other applicable requirements. Duties include developing and offering resources and programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), including hiring and search practices. This position will have responsibility for communications, curriculum development, training, programs and support for faculty, staff and students to enhance the College's ability to attract, retain and develop a greater diversity of faculty and staff, and to grow the diversity of the student body.

Responsibilities

50% Stewards the E&I Strategic Plan for the College of Engineering: works with practitioners to ensure the success of existing DEI programs, and oversees the development and implementation of new initiatives to increase hiring and retention of a diversity of faculty and staff, to improve classroom climate and sense of belonging for students, and to improve workplace climate for faculty and staff; for each DEI program/initiative, establishes and tracks metrics, benchmarks and evaluation systems as appropriate to monitor progress toward equity and inclusion goals; collaboratively implements an inclusive process to update the E&I Strategic Plan as needed.

10% Provides leadership to identify and address current and emerging DEI issues.

10% Stays abreast of research related to diversity in STEM fields and applies research findings to systematically promote best practices for advancing DEI. Anticipates future needs, challenges and opportunities, and collaborates with the College Leadership Team to create College-wide Strategy.

10% Meets regularly and works collaboratively with leaders of the college and its departments, institutes & centers, faculty, and student organizations, including in fundraising for DEI programs. Also represents the College of Engineering in campus-wide and UC system-wide initiatives as appropriate, including coordination with the Office of Equity & Inclusion.

10% Ensures timely and up-to-date communications regarding community principles, DEI-related policies, programs and initiatives in various formats including online (i.e. webpages), in newsletters, brochures, and social media.

5% Serves as functional owner of confidential data collected for EEO compliance, ensuring that they are available for required federal reporting and are used only in accordance with university policy.

5% Engages in ongoing professional development.



Required Qualifications
  • Up-to-date knowledge of theory and best practices for advancing DEI in STEM fields
  • Familiarity with methodologies and practices for organizational change that can meaningfully improve climate and employee engagement
  • Knowledge of human resources-related, equal opportunity employment and affirmative action laws and policies
  • Skill in gathering and analyzing large and complex data sets to identify key factors, correlations and trends
  • Track record of strategic planning and successful project/program management
  • Ability to effectively lead a diverse team with direct reports and with cross-functional team members that do not have a direct, formal reporting structure
  • Experience advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in a complex organization with a track record of successful accomplishments
  • Experience collaborating with faculty and students to develop and make progress toward mutual goals
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills for collaboration with a diversity of people at all levels and for influencing and facilitating sustained change
  • A Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related field required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • An Advanced Degree in higher education, sociology, social work, psychology or other related field, or equivalent experience, is preferred.
  • Experience working in higher education is preferred. Experience in human resources, compliance and/or equal opportunity is also preferred.
