The Director and faculty of the Institute will have tenure eligible equal joint appointments in MUSOM and MUCECS. The research enterprise at MUSOM has grown exponentially over the last several years to achieve its first ever US News & World Report Medical School Research Ranking in 2020 as well as substantially contribute to Marshall’s R2 status as a “high research activity” institution from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in 2019.

The new department will have both tenured faculty positions as part of the Institute as well as term educator faculty positions within MUCECS. The department’s educational mission is expected to achieve Accreditation with Board for Engineering and Technology certification in due course. The undergraduate curriculum for the Department has been jointly developed between CECS, COS and SOM and has been approved by the MU Board of Governors in 2018. The department has office, class rooms and teaching laboratories in the new Arthur Weisberg Family Applied Engineering Complex (AEC), a 152,000 sqFt facility located next to the SOM’s Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center (BBSC), a 200,000 sqFt research facility.
