General Summary/Purpose:

The Research Specialist II will work in the Division of Gastroenterology and will interface with members of this and other labs in the Division. The position will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory principles and techniques associated with molecular and cell biology to perform the required tasks. A qualified applicant should be capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating results. When needed, he or she will also provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.

The Research Specialist II will work in a laboratory that focuses on the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The Research Specialist II will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques to maintain all animal protocols, large animal experiments, mouse colonies, laboratory equipment, reagent inventories, and assist in routine experimental work like plasmid preparations, cell culture and purification of recombinant proteins. The work will also involve maintaining organoid cultures, develop and use organoid platforms, use bacterial to develop models of host-pathogen interactions. The Research Specialist II has experience with cell handling and is capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Participates in planning studies and evaluating/interpreting test results utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices involving intestinal epithelial cells. These lab-based duties will include:

  • Isolation and manipulation of human and mouse enteroids
  • Independent troubleshooting of technical and experimental issues
  • Selects, develops, performs and evaluates research methods; operates appropriate equipment.
  • Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments. Be knowledgeable of and employ good tissue culture techniques.
  • Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
  • Is an integrated member of the research team. May be involved inestablishing laboratory protocols. Will be asked to prepare reports on the analysis.
  • Exercises professional and scientific judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results. Engages in regular and continuous decision making having an impact on the success of the laboratory.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills. Has operating knowledge of the personal computer and has the ability to search and retrieve information onthe role of extracellular matrix proteins in inflammation and fibrosisfrom the internet.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field
  • Two years of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula***.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Related Master's degree or higher preferred.

Any Specific Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use a keyboard and move about.
  • Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
