The Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine seeks applications for an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology / Ophthalmologist position to work at locations in Baltimore, Maryland, and Bel Air, Maryland. The Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology / Ophthalmologist will function as a tenure-track member of the faculty with demonstrated achievement in areas of research, teaching, and professional service.

Job Duties

Engage in the education of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine medical/surgical residents, mid-level providers, and other staff through teaching and related activities. Oversee residents during clinical shifts and ophthalmic surgeries, and facilitate on-site, hands-on learning experiences for residents. Attend and participate in grand rounds with residents. Provide formal written evaluations for residents. As needed, provide medical evaluation and treatment (including surgical eye care) of patients with ophthalmological symptoms and/or conditions of the retina, vitreoretinal, visual physiologic, and genetic eye disease. Pursue a focused and independent research program in genetic eye disease, working collaboratively with others to develop a state-of-the-art Genetic Eye Disease Center. Document important research findings and publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Apply for external research funding and write successful grants. Supervise one Laboratory Technician, one Ophthalmic Technicians, one Sr. Research Specialist, and one Research Technologist. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Position will work at the Wilmer Eye Institute locations in Baltimore, MD and Bel Air, MD.

  1. Medical degree (or foreign equivalent);
  2. Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in Ophthalmology, Visual Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, or a closely related field;
  3. Completion of a residency in Ophthalmology;
  4. Possession of, or eligibility for, Maryland medical license.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
