Position Title Assistant Director of Media Relations Overview

Manage the College’s relationships and daily interactions with local/regional print, broadcast, and online news media.

Essential Duties:

1. Manage the College’s daily interactions with local/regional print, broadcast, and online news media, including processing incoming requests to speak with/interview Providence College professors, faculty, and staff. Work with departmental leadership to choose the appropriate faculty or staff member to accommodate the specific media request, ensure his/her availability and willingness to speak with media, provide whatever information is necessary to best prepare the faculty or staff member for the interview, and provide contact information for that individual to the media in addition to confirming the date/time/place for the interview. At times, this may involve accompanying the individual to the interview and/or sitting in on the interview.

2. Proactively seek print, broadcast, and online opportunities to promote the College, its students, faculty, and staff in local/regional media, in alignment with the College’s Strategic Plan and current admission plans/goals.

3. Oversee regular maintenance and updating of the “Hot Topic” video section of the department’s web site, which requires arranging and interviewing select faculty and staff, shooting and editing video footage, and posting the completed videos on the web site.

4. Prepare each edition of the department’s “PC in the News” online newsletter for faculty and staff. This newsletter is published bi-weekly during the academic year and monthly during the summer.

5. Oversee the collection and dissemination of information to promote the College’s students in their hometown publications and broadcast media (i.e., Dean’s List, study abroad, service immersion trips, various academic honors, etc.). Coordinate with other departments as necessary to secure and disseminate this information. Collect similar relevant information about College faculty and staff (academic honors, research grants, fellowships, awards, etc.)

6. Develop an annual plan to provide media training for interested faculty and staff and execute, ideally so that training is provided once per semester for those interested.

Marginal Duties:

1. Perform all other duties as may be required.

Education and Experience Required

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution required.

• Minimum of four to five years’ experience in media/public relations, news writing, television production, and/or a related communications field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• High degree of computer literacy, including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, content management systems (SharePoint, WordPress), various photography and video editing suites (iMovie), and other programs.

• Excellent organizational skills.

• Problem solving skills and the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.

• Ability to work effectively on multiple projects simultaneously.

• Sensitivity to the public relations implications of all news, events, and faculty expertise information made available to media outlets, and the impact of that information on the reputation of the College.

• Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of people, including reporters, editors, producers, bloggers, and web site editors, and members of the campus community, as well as executive and community leaders.
