Position Summary:

We are looking for a detail-oriented, innovative system administrator who is driven to explore new technologies. This position is primarily responsible for the design and administration of Linux infrastructure and high-level network administration to support research and instruction for members of the Social Science Computing Cooperative (SSCC) at UW-Madison. The ideal candidate likes to try new things and considers failure part of the process. They are able to estimate work required and then deliver on those estimates while working with multiple competing priorities. Additionally, they possess excellent oral and written communication skills, and a commitment to quality customer service. It will be essential that they collaborate closely with other SSCC staff.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelor's degree required; preferably in an information technology field

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Required skills:
* 2 years Linux/Unix system administration experience

Preferred skills:
* Experience using git or other source control system
* Understanding of OSI model (including tcp/udp, IPv4/v6, VLANs)
* Host-based or network firewall administration (PaloAlto, Cisco, etc) knowledge
* Experience with configuration management systems (Ansible, chef, puppet etc).
* Experience working with HIPAA protected or other sensitive data
* Experience administering Apache and database MySQL/MariaDB/PostgreSQL systems
* LDAP directory administration experience
* Experience administering virtual environments (ideally with VMWare ESXi)

Additional Information:

The Social Science Computing Cooperative (SSCC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides high-volume research computing services to over 900 faculty, researchers, staff, and graduate students in the Center for Demography and Ecology, Center for Demography of Health and Aging, Department of Anthropology, Department of Economics, Department of Sociology, Institute on Aging, Institute for Research on Poverty, School of Human Ecology, School of Medicine and Public Health, and UW Survey Center. The SSCC also provides instructional computing support for approximately 2400 students in the Social Science division of the College of Letters and Sciences.
