Summary/Objective

This position is responsible for developing and implementing individualized strength and conditioning programs for over 250 student-athletes in 16 varsity sports. The Assistant Athletic Director/Strength & Conditioning works closely with Head Coaches to create sport specific programs to enhance the student-athletes’ strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance. This individual will also work closely with the Athletic Training Staff in implementation of sport specific and gender specific injury prevention programs. Additionally, this individual will coordinate the strengthening program with an emphasis on injury prevention and safe, timely and healthy recovery and rehabilitation for athletic related injuries. The position is responsible for construction of sport specific training programs for in-season, out-of-season and summer sessions; minimizing the reliance on machines and circuit training in the construction of team programs is essential. This position will be required to conduct regular testing to asses each individual athlete’s level of progress and to make necessary adjustments to their strengthening program. They also need to prepare regular reports to sport head coaches concerning the status and progress of the student-athletes.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervise: one (1) full time assistant, and one part-time assistant, one intern, and one part-time mental performance consultant. Manage strength and conditioning budget. Provide instruction and supervision for approximately 250 student-athletes.

Essential Functions

1. (30% of Time) Supervises all aspects of the strength & conditioning program, including interaction and communication with other university employees who have direct contact with strength & conditioning staff. Collaborates with Athletic Training Staff on all aspects of team strength and condition programs and injury recovery and prevention for all sports with particular focus on Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball. Responsible for hiring and training of staff members in the area of strength and conditioning.

2. (30% of Time) Develop strength of each student-athlete and conditioning of each with individualized plans and programs. Responsible for management of student-athlete heart-rate monitoring systems. Provides enhanced analysis of data to significantly improve student-athlete performance and health. Work directly with Men’s and Women’s Basketball coaches to physically develop them for all phases of season, pre and off season. Includes supervising all workouts and attending practices based on availability. Regular testing to determine progress and making needed individual adjustments.

3. (20% of Time) Physical development for approximately 8 to 11 of other American University sports teams and student-athletes focusing on instruction in proper technique and safe progression; limiting machines and circuit training when appropriate. Individual team programs should be constructed in a manner that will allow for head coaches to safely administer and monitor in the absence of the Head Strength Coach.

4. (10% of Time) Hire, onboard, train and manage staff of the strength & conditioning program. This includes providing ongoing coaching and feedback, directing the work, managing performance and encouraging professional development.

5. (5% of Time) Oversees the management of strength room, records, and equipment. Ensures all equipment, room and records in good order. Resolves any major issues/concerns and arranges for maintenance and repair of equipment.

6. (5% of Time) Participate in continuing education through attendance at conferences, symposium and readings to maintain knowledge of current techniques, trends and advancements in physical development; especially as they relate to basketball, field hockey and soccer.

Work Environment

This position requires travel and a may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays with a limited amount of supervision.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in physical education, exercise science, biomechanics or related field; and certification in strength and conditioning (NSCA/CSCS or ACSM)
  • Minimum of three years’ experience as an assistant or Head strength and conditioning coach on the collegiate or professional level


Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master’s Degree


Additional Eligibility Qualifications
  • Computer skills to develop, record and maintain information on each athlete
  • Experience with multi sport weight training programs and individualizing workouts to reduce risk of injury and enhance performance
  • This position requires extensive knowledge of Olympic lifting, cardiovascular and sport specific training techniques; the ability to provide instruction in the proper techniques for each
  • This position also requires experience with the instruction and implementation of alternative training techniques to include: core stabilization, plyometrics, speed and agility programs to enhance student-athlete’s sport specific skills. Knowledge of proper periodization techniques as well as a flexibility of exercises and equipment should be a critical component of summer programs
