The Biology and Marine Biology Department supports both an excellent undergraduate program, with an emphasis on hands-on involvement of undergraduates in research and other activities, as well as nationally recognized Master’s Programs. We also have a Ph.D. in Marine Biology that takes advantage of the wide array of local coastal and offshore habitats and the facilities of the Center for Marine Science, located 6 miles from the main university campus. We have an active faculty involved in a variety of research interests including molecular biology and systematics, coastal and estuarine ecology, invertebrate and vertebrate biology, and environmental biology.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The primary responsibility of the Greenhouse Manager is to maintain the greenhouse and surrounding gardens to support UNCW’s teaching and research mission. The duties include maintaining the live collections, maintenance and basic repairs of greenhouse equipment, purchasing materials to support teaching and research, and seeking funds to support the greenhouse mission. Additionally, the Greenhouse Manager will supervise undergraduate Directed Independent Study projects and volunteers and contributes to courses depending on expertise. Opportunities to contribute include undergraduate and graduate courses and public outreach. The Greenhouse Manager will also, if needed, consult with the Office of Facilities on appropriate plantings in areas around the greenhouse.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment + 1 year of directly related experience; or equivalent combination of training and/or related experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred education, professional skills and experience

-Formal education in plant sciences or organismal biology, broadly defined

-Experience with working with plants in a controlled setting

-Familiar with plant-based research

-Knowledgeable of other appropriate biological/ horticultural training and directly related experience

-Knowledgeable of experimental procedures and protocols

-Experienced in the horticulture of common plants

-Understanding of (or willingness to obtain and understanding of) plants native to Southeastern North Carolina

-Skilled in working and communicating with a broad audience (students, faculty, groundskeepers, administrators, public citizens/officials).

-Capability to reconcile a budget

Required Certifications or licensure

NC Pesticide License should be obtained in the first 6 months of employment.

The Department of Biology and Marine Biology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington ( UNCW ) invites applications for a full-time Greenhouse Manager to support and contribute to the teaching and research missions of the university beginning as soon as possible. This is a full-time, 12-month position.

Preference will be given to candidates with formal education in horticulture, plant sciences, or organismal biology, broadly defined, and to those with experience with working with plants in a controlled setting. Candidates familiar with plant-based research are particularly desired.
