Conducts fire and life safety inspections and implements and enforces applicable National Fire Protection Association Standards, State Fire Marshal mandates and University of Houston policies, orders and directives.

  1. Conducts life safety inspections of interiors and exteriors of University facilities to detect fire hazards, efficiency of fire protection systems, and adequacy of fire escapes and exits.
  2. Prepares detailed inspection reports; discusses unsafe conditions and corrective actions with responsible party.
  3. Issues notices for uncorrected fire hazards from previous inspections and follows up to resolves compliance problems.
  4. Conducts permit inspections and issues permits in compliance with fire safety regulations.
  5. Performs periodic flow tests and inspections of campus fire hydrants.
  6. Responds to complaints regarding fire hazards and code violations; researches fire code violations and provides direction and/or technical assistance for correction.
  7. Coordinates fire drills and fire prevention programs to educate faculty, staff, and students.
  8. Reviews fire protection plans and building plans for applicable code compliance, advises of required changes, and approves completed plans.
  9. Conducts acceptance tests of fire alarms, sprinklers, and other fire protection systems and equipment; coordinates corrections with contractors.Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

18 months and 3 years experience.

Requires specialized training in basic trades, principles, procedures, practice, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.

Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.

Additional Information / Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred qualifications: Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) basic firefighter or TCFP basic Inspector or equivalent.

  • 3 years or more experience conducting fire and life safety inspections.
  • Basic Fire Inspector certificate from Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
  • 3 years or more experience responding to complaints regarding fire hazards and code violations; researching fire code violations and providing direction and/or technical assistance.
