Responsibilities: 

Teaching is the primary job responsibility.  The department offers a BA in urban studies and planning and a MA in urban planning.   Teaching responsibilities will include introductory level general education courses focusing on the evolution of urbanism and the structure of cities as well as upper division and graduate level courses reflecting department needs and the candidate’s areas of professional expertise. The candidate may also have the opportunity to teach in the Master of Sustainability program.  The normal teaching load is 12 credits per semester.  The successful candidate will pursue an ongoing research agenda and will publish the results of their research in peer-reviewed journals.  Service to the department, college, and university is also a key job responsibility. 

The successful applicant will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she is housed for recommending tenure and promotion. 

Qualifications:  

A Ph.D. in city, urban, or regional planning, urban studies, or a closely related field from a fully accredited university is required.  Expertise in computer based-graphic communication methods and the ability to teach these techniques (e.g. geographic information science - GIS, Creative Suite Applications, and Sketch-Up) is required.  Specialization in environmental planning, sustainability, resiliency, or housing is preferred. 

Prior college or university level teaching experience (as the instructor of record) in a comparable university setting is required. 

Research experience in city, urban, or regional planning, urban studies, and/or closely related fields is required.  Candidates with evidence of peer-reviewed scholarly publication and/or successful grant applications are preferred.  Experience in community engagement and local community research projects is desired.

Applicants must demonstrate a commitment and ability to teach, mentor and work with a diverse student population.

At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

All positions are contingent upon Provost’s approval and budgetary considerations.
