Teaching: The standard teaching load is 12 units (4 courses) per semester (3/3 for the first two years). The successful candidate will teach a variety of existing undergraduate courses in Jewish Studies, some of which may be cross-listed with History, Gender and Women’s Studies, Sociology, or other departments. The successful candidate will also work closely with the Program Director to develop new courses that complement existing curriculum, draw on faculty strengths, and meet the needs and interests of students.
Contributions to the Field: All faculty are expected to demonstrate successful research, publication and other scholarly, professional, and/or creative activities in their field of specialization.
Service: The successful candidate will work closely with the Jewish Studies Program Director on scheduling classes, managing the Program's budget, and other duties. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to participate in maintaining and developing Jewish Studies program ties throughout the local Jewish community and within the CSUN community.
The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she is housed for recommending tenure and promotion.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent from an accredited institution by the time of appointment, and a thorough knowledge of the field of Jewish Studies. Candidates must provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and a commitment to teaching a diverse student population, including first-generation college students. Evidence of potential for successful research, publication, and other scholarly/professional/creative activities is also required, with peer-reviewed publication in the field of Jewish Studies preferred.
Field of specialization is open, excluding U.S.-focused specializations. The successful candidate will be comfortable as a generalist in Jewish Studies, teaching courses such as Jewish Religion and Culture, the History of the Jewish People, and/or Israel’s History and Peoples. Candidates must be able to make their work relevant to students and be willing to engage in community outreach. Leadership experience in an academic setting is preferred, as the successful candidate may serve as Director of the Jewish Studies program in the future. Must be willing to reach beyond Jewish Studies to form collaborative relationships with other academic departments and programs.
Candidates must demonstrate a commitment and ability to teach, mentor and work with a diverse student population.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to work in the United States.
All positions are contingent upon Provost’s approval and budget considerations.
