Medical Educator – Biochemistry (Assistant Professor or Higher) Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) El Paso Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM)

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso – Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is seeking a highly qualified faculty member to join our Department of Medical Education with an emphasis on teaching medical biochemistry. The successful candidate will assume a major educational role working with an interdisciplinary team of faculty to develop and deliver an integrated clinical presentation-based curriculum. The successful candidate will also engage in scholarship and academic service activities aligned with individual interests, credentials and experience.

Position Description:

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide instruction and integration in the basic and clinical sciences using various teaching methods including lectures, laboratories, demonstrations, interactive computer-based exercises, small group discussions, team-taught classroom activities.
  • Provide medical education approximately 80% time and effort, primarily delivering the first and second year medical student curriculum.
  • Basic Science Medical Educators will participate in scholarly activity approximately 20% time and effort (emphasizing scholarship in either their primary area of scientific expertise or in medical education or in both domains).
  • Clinician Medical Educators will participate in clinical practice at approximately 20% time and effort through the TTUHSC/PLFSOM Clinical Department associated with their practice specialty.
  • Provide supervision and evaluation of medical student performance.
  • Actively participate in ongoing educational program development and continuous quality improvement in support of the school's innovative clinical presentation-based curriculum.
  • Work collaboratively to integrate basic science and clinical learning objectives into a seamless interdisciplinary four year medical school curriculum (as ultimately directed by the School Of Medicine and its Curriculum and Educational Policy Committee).
  • Adhere to institutional policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in accordance with the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine's Declaration of Faculty Professional Responsibility.
  • Service on departmental and institutional committees and task forces as assigned.
  • Fulfill administrative duties as negotiated with the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications: Basic Science Medical Educator
  • Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent terminal degree in biochemistry or a closely related biomedical science (M.D. candidates without a Ph.D. in a relevant biomedical science must have additional credentials related to advanced scientific training and scholarship).
  • Demonstrated expertise in biochemistry, including a record of substantial achievement in teaching biochemistry and in relevant biomedical science-related scholarship (as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and by a substantial record of teaching, curriculum design, course or program management, and favorable evaluations by students and peers).

Clinician Medical Educator
  • In addition to the minimum qualifications for Basic Science Medical Educator (as listed above), physician candidates applying for the Clinician Medical Educator option must be Board Certified (ABMS recognized), qualify for an unrestricted Texas Medical License and must agree to obtain an unrestricted Texas Medical License within 2 years of employment. All other candidates will be considered under the Basic Science Medical Educator option.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional expertise and experience teaching basic principles of pharmacology.
  • Additional expertise and experience teaching basic principles of nutritional biochemistry.
  • Experience with development and delivery of a course or major course components in biochemistry or related biomedical science at an LCME accredited medical school.
  • Experience with innovative teaching methods including team teaching, problem based learning, interactive large group presentations, and computer-based interactive teaching programs.
  • Experience with computer-based programs for curriculum management such as Blackboard or Canvas.
  • Participation in national organizations or committees devoted to medical education.
  • Previous publications in the medical education literature.
  • Experience in the development of grant proposals and the management of extramural funding.
  • Training or experience in development and delivery of an integrated medical curriculum.
