Assistant Professor, Medical Physics

The Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Washington (UW), School of Medicine, is seeking a highly motivated faculty medical physicist to advance our service, research, and teaching missions at the UW Medical Center and affiliated Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) Proton Therapy Center.  The department offers patients advanced radiation treatment modalities including proton, neutron, photon and electron modalities, stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy, brachytherapy and intraoperative therapy. The duties of this position may include clinical service and research in proton therapy.

Appointment will be to a full-time position at an academic rank of Assistant Professor without tenure with an anticipated start date of approximately Spring 2021.  This is a full-time position with a twelve month appointment with salary paid over twelve months for eleven months of service.

Medical physics faculty support the clinical, research, teaching and development missions of the department. Each is expected to publish scholarly work and to seek and maintain external grant support of an independent research program. Current research programs of interest to our faculty include four main focus areas: (1) imaging and adaptive RT, (2) quality improvement and global health, (3) data science and informatics, and (4) radiation response and immunotherapy. This research includes contributions to clinical trials, a small animal image-guided proton irradiator and proton FLASH beamline.

Teaching participation in the department’s ACGME-accredited and CAMPEP-accredited residency training programs is expected. There are also opportunities for supervising and advising students and post-doctoral fellows in their research field.  Clinical service will be primarily based at the SCCA Proton Therapy Center, covering all aspects of advanced proton radiation therapy physics and development of new imaging and treatment protocols in collaboration with other medical physics faculty and staff.

Department Overview:

The Department of Radiation Oncology treats over 2,800 patients yearly from a multi-state region covering over 25% of the U.S. geographic area. Our clinical approach is collaborative with numerous multidisciplinary clinics and tumor boards. The SCCA Proton Therapy Center offers cyclotron accelerator-based pencil beam scanning treatments on gantry, incline, and fixed beamlines, as well as uniform scanning treatments on an incline beamline.  We enjoy strong collaborations with clinical and basic researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the UW Department of Radiology, and the SCCA Proton Therapy Center physics staff. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in medical physics or a related field (or foreign equivalent) and board certification in medical physics or eligibility for this certification.  A strong interest in and commitment to research and education is expected, as well as strong collaboration with the multidisciplinary teams.
