Job Description:

I.  Job Summary

The Academic Coach at Dean College provides a strategy-based approach to academic support for students enrolled in Academic Coaching, a fee-based learning program open to all students at the institution. Academic Coaches work both in person and online with students to address immediate academic needs, while developing long-term independent skills in studying, reading, and organization. Academic Coaches help students become independent learners and to eventually transition away from tutorial support. Time management, organization and long-term planning are some of the skills that students gain through their experience in Academic Coaching. This is a fall-spring semester, part-time position, twenty to twenty-nine hours per week for 14 weeks each semester. Prospective candidates' must be available to work at least two days and two evenings per week.

II.  Job Duties

  • Working with individual students to provide academic support through strategy-based initiatives (time management, planning for long term assignments, preparing for tests/exams, note taking, and course assignment support);
  • Providing student assistance with subject matter work as it relates to reading, test preparation and writing;
  • Actively supporting the learning process and work to create and support a student-centered environment;
  • Collaborating with Success and Career Advisors and faculty to support students enrolled in Academic Coaching program;
  • Motivating students through the learning process and providing referrals as needed;
  • Assisting, when needed, in the delivery of all programs and services provided by the Morton Family Learning Center;
  • Assisting Morton Family Learning Center staff with special projects as assigned by the Director, including occasional administrative duties;
  • Providing documentation and analysis of student attendance and performance during coaching sessions;
  • Guiding and supporting students in accessing online learning systems and software including Microsoft TEAMS, Outlook, MyCourses, and other online learning platforms;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned. 

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Education, English or related field;
  • Experience working with students with learning difficulties, preferably at the college level;
  • Understanding of student development theory and different learning styles;
  • Experience motivating students in the learning process; Tutoring experience preferred;
  • Prospective candidates must be available to work at least four days per week;
  • Must be able to work some weekends and/or off hours to make up hours when necessary;
  • Prospective candidates must be prepared to sit for extended periods of time;
  • In addition, knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook is essential;
  • Familiarity/or ability to learn online delivery platforms including Microsoft TEAMS and Zoom as well as various assistive technologies as directed;
  • Prospective candidates must be prepared to look at computer screens for long periods of time.
