Job Description:

The Department of Environmental Studies at Bellarmine University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor to begin August 15, 2021. We seek a candidate specializing in Environmental Justice, defined as fair and equal access to environmental decision-making and protections for all people, particularly people of color. The teaching, service, and scholarship of the intended hire would encompass the intersection of social science and the environment and support our university and departmental commitment to equity and inclusion. A scholar with a disciplinary home in human geography, urban planning, environmental health, or similar field would be a valuable addition to our Environmental Studies faculty, the Bellarmine faculty at large, and the Louisville community.

Teaching responsibilities will include a rotation of Human Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Environmental Justice, Environmental Research and Careers, Senior Environmental Seminar, and courses in the candidate's area of expertise to fulfill 21 hours of teaching load annually.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. in Geography or related discipline, with expertise in Environmental Justice, by August of 2021.
  • The candidate should exhibit a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as demonstrated by innovative undergraduate pedagogy, community engagement efforts, and research endeavors, especially involving undergraduate students.
  • The candidate must have a minimum of 18 hours of graduate-level coursework completed in Geography or a closely related field and be able to teach courses in Human Geography, Environmental Justice, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using ArcGIS Pro.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated record of success in grant-writing
  • Certification as a Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) or similar demonstration of proficiency in GIS

Additional Information:

This new hire to begin in August 2021 supports a nuanced program shift toward environmental justice and community engagement that will supplement our program that is strong in lab and field-based Environmental Science.

The Environmental Studies and Environmental Science degree programs at Bellarmine University provide a transformative student experience in environmental problem-solving and capacity-building through intensive coursework involving field trips, technical skill development, and community engagement toward a fulfilling and meaningful career improving the human condition and the natural world.

Our program differs from that of other universities in that the program is overseen by designated faculty housed specifically within the Department of Environmental Studies, as opposed to programs at other universities that are comprised of coursework from existing academic programs with no stand-alone department. We also regularly collaborate with faculty across the university, as the interdisciplinary nature of Environmental Studies is enhanced by forging connections to the natural and social sciences, humanities, health sciences, and more.

Our academic program features full-time faculty with specific expertise in geology and ecology and dedicated part-time faculty with expertise in environmental education, environmental law and policy, and sustainability; our coursework frequently includes community engagement opportunities that are greatly enhanced by our location in the greater Louisville region. Our dedicated equipment and facilities include an LG&E-sponsored laboratory and classroom space, a classroom set of laptops with Geographic Information Systems software, and lab and field instrumentation. All students in our academic programs are required to complete an internship experience, and we promote study-abroad and service-learning opportunities related to Environmental Studies. The department also administers the Terra Learning Community, which is a first-year academic experience for students of any major who are interested in sustainability.

Bellarmine University is committed to core values of diversity, equity and inclusion and embraces diversity in our workforce among members of faculty, staff and administration. We remain committed to affirmative actions, policies, procedures and attitudes necessary to continue to build and retain a diverse and equitable workforce. We will demonstrate a fully realized and lived commitment to equity and inclusion, empowering all members of our increasingly diverse community and supporting them to achieve their full potential. As part of Bellarmine's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, we will seek to ensure that all aspects of employment, including recruitment, selection, job assignment, training, compensation, benefits, discipline, promotion, layoff and termination processes remain free of illegal discrimination based upon race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, creed, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, genetic information, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected class.

Application Instructions:

Please submit a cover letter, CV, and unofficial transcripts; statements of teaching and research philosophies; a diversity statement including evidence of past efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in your teaching, research, and service; and the names and contact information for three professional references to Dr. Kate Bulinski, Committee Chair, by clicking the link contained in this posting.

Application materials should indicate the candidate's specific interest in the position at Bellarmine, detailed evidence of community engagement, a discussion of research and teaching goals, and a discussion of the candidate's commitment to equity and inclusion. Official transcripts will be required upon hiring.

Applications will not be considered until all required items have been submitted. Applications are now being accepted only online. Review will begin on December 15th, 2020 and continue until the position is filled.
