Job Description
Applications are invited for the position of Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech. This position is responsible for leading the Undergraduate Student Services office of the department, which currently includes four academic advisors and two staff positions. Key responsibilities of this position include providing administrative leadership for student recruiting, advising, and student progress and degree completion; student engagement and student life; career and professional development; internal and external communication and marketing; and undergraduate program event planning. In addition, the successful candidate will support and collaborate with the Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Studies (to whom this position reports) on strategic and policy aspects of the program, including diversity and inclusion; student scholarships; curriculum development; data collection, analysis, and reporting; assessment; and course enrollment management and planning. The Computer Science undergraduate program is the largest in the College of Engineering, with over 1200 majors currently enrolled; we also offer courses to students pursuing several other related majors and minors. The Department is expected to continue to grow rapidly both in Blacksburg and in its graduate programs in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in computer science or another science or engineering discipline; or Master’s degree in higher education, academic advising or related field
Strong communication and personal skills
Ability to work effectively with a diverse population, including students, faculty, and staff
Experience with typical administrative software tools including electronic file sharing, word processing, and spreadsheets
Experience preparing and analyzing data-driven reports or plans
Preferred Qualifications
Professional experience in academic advising
Professional experience in higher education
Professional experience as a supervisor
Experience in communications or marketing
Experience working with international students
Experience with university student records systems
