Position Summary:

The School of Human Ecology invites applications for a full time, 9-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate professor to join the faculty of the Design Studies Department.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to conduct and disseminate impactful research scholarship, and to deliver rigorous studio and seminar instruction in the Interior Architecture (IA) program. The IA program is currently proposing a co-teaching model for studio instruction, where practice- and research-focused faculty equally contribute to student?s learning experiences. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally competitive research program relevant to the multidisciplinary field of Environmental Design Research, with an emphasis on the dynamic relationship between people and their physical, social, and cultural environment. . Applicants should demonstrate experience and expertise in one or more of the following thematic areas:

Human-Centered Design: The ability to engage issues of human health and wellbeing in relation to building design across building types (residential, educational, hospitality, commercial, etc.), specifically focusing on diverse human needs across the human life span (e.g., childhood, mid-life, aging, etc.) or on special populations (e.g., disability).

Evidence-Based Design: The ability to offer insight on systematic integration of research knowledge into design practice.

Technology integration: The ability to integrate noble technology (Virtual Reality, wearable tech, IoT, smart home systems) into the design and research process in order to explore issues of human health and wellbeing in buildings.

Environmental Systems and Human Comfort: The ability to offer knowledge and insights on critical building components (e.g., lighting, color, products, materials) and related regulations and codes, particularly focusing on their impact on sustainability and human wellbeing

Cultural Diversity, multi-culturalism, and environmental justice: The ability to engage issues of equity, affordable accommodations, community-based design processes, and to promote diversity through a global perspective and locally sensitive design processes.

Design Strategy: The ability to explore how the built environment supports and empowers people and transforms organizations.

The successful candidate is also required to participate in department service, such as curriculum development, award jurying, advising, faculty meeting attendance, and serving on dissertation committees. In addition, service to the college, university and the profession is expected. The appointment will start in August 2020.
The Interior Architecture program is fully accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), with the next accreditation visit scheduled for 2023.

Principal Duties:

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver lecture courses, seminars, and design studio courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, to provide leadership in recruiting, teaching, and mentoring of graduate students, and to advise students on academic and career choices. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an active research program, to actively develop and lead an independent, externally funded research program, and to disseminate their scholarly output through a rigorous peer-review process commensurate with UW-Madison tenure requirements. Collaboration with investigators in the Design Studies Department, School of Human Ecology, and/or other research centers at UW-Madison or its partner institutions will also be expected.

As a good citizen of the department who promotes respect and practice of civility in the workplace, the successful candidate will join the faculty in shared governance of the Interior Architecture Program, the department, the school, and the university.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

A PhD degree in Environmental Design with a specialty in Environment Behavior Studies, Environmental Psychology, or other related areas is required for the first position.
A terminal degree in Environmental Design (e.g., Ph.D., MFA, M. Arch.) is required for the second position with a strong preference given to a PhD holder.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Minimum Required Qualifications:
Years of experience will be commensurate with the rank sought. All candidates must have proven success in conducting research and teaching appropriate for their stage of career.

Assistant professor candidates must have a terminal degree degree at time of application, or official notification of completion of the degree by August 17, 2020.

Associate professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials that meet the tenure and professorial rank standards of the UW-Madison Divisional Committee and of the School of Human Ecology.

The ability to lead a research program that attracts external funding individually and/or through active collaboration, that actively attracts and engages graduate students, and that produces high-impact scholarship.

The ability to teach Interior Architecture studio and lecture courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels including, but not limited to, current knowledge on design communication technology and willingness to stay up to date.

Demonstrated experience at creating process-driven, research-based, human-centered design solutions for a range of design challenges at a level appropriate for grad/undergrad studio teaching.

The ability to work effectively within a diverse community, and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
- NCIDQ certified or eligible
- 2~3 years of teaching experience and graduate mentioring after completion of a Ph.D. degree

License or Certificate:

NCIDQ (National Council for Interior Design Qualification) holder preferred.
