About the College/Unit/Department

The internationally recognized CAIS reports to the UGA Vice President for Research. CAIS is the largest isotope geochemistry laboratory / radiocarbon AMS dating facility in the U.S. and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025:2005. CAIS is a free-standing facility of nearly 20,000 sq. ft. on the UGA campus and contains state-of-the-art equipment for radiocarbon dating, environmental analyses, food flavor and beverage authenticity testing, and bio-based product testing, among other services. Reflecting the Center’s interdisciplinary nature, its 40+ scientists, staff, and students are experts in physical chemistry, geology, marine science, physics, archaeology, ecology, and biology. They collaborate in research and method development, serve the UGA research community, and work with a worldwide clientele, including academic institutions, government agencies, and private companies. Annual revenue is approximately $3 million. CAIS scientists also contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring, host students in their laboratories, and offer a robust K-12 outreach program.

Position Summary

The University of Georgia’s ( UGA ) Center for Applied Isotope Studies ( CAIS ) is seeking a Director at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Senior Research Scientist. The CAIS is the largest isotope geochemistry / radiocarbon AMS dating facility in the U.S. and is accredited under ISO / IEC 17025:2017. CAIS contains state-of-the-art facilities for radiocarbon dating, environmental analyses, food flavor and beverage authenticity testing, and bio-based product testing (http://cais.uga.edu). CAIS’s interdisciplinary 40+ scientists collaborate in research and method development, serve the UGA research community and work with a worldwide clientele, including academic institutions, government agencies, and private companies.

The Director will oversee scientific, fiscal and regulatory activities, and work closely with scientists to develop, refine, and implement a vision for the Center’s continuing growth and preservation of ISO / IEC accreditation. The Director serves as the interface with the UGA Office of Research for policy interpretation, report preparation, and personnel administration.

The Center for Isotope Studies ( CAIS ) director provides primary leadership for a robust and technologically advanced research and service center. This position is mission critical. CAIS has a mix of industrial and academic clients all around the world and across UGA . It generates annual revenues of approximately $3M each year. The CAIS director manages these activities, and ensures that the Center remains technologically state of the art and retains its ISO / IEC 17025:2017 accreditation. The director also ensures that CAIS operates with fiscal and scientific integrity. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that the Center supports interdisciplinary work at UGA and offers unique training opportunities for students, undergraduate and graduate. Currently, the Center collaborates with and supports the work of faculty in UGA’s Departments of Chemistry, Marine Science, Ecology, Archaeology and many others across UGA .

Additional Requirements

Qualifications for this position include a Ph.D. in a physical science or related field plus a CAIS -relevant scientific background (https://cais.uga.edu/research/) and a record of obtaining external funds to support research and commensurate with rank.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

Candidates currently active in academia as well as those currently active in non-profits, government agencies, research organizations, conservatories, and/or industry are encouraged to apply.

Preferred additional qualifications are a background in a facility or laboratory operating, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing compact accelerators, IRMS, GC/MS, ICP and HPLC instrumentation. A demonstrated record of excellence in a scientific area directly relevant to the work of the CAIS, interests and specific expertise in isotope methodologies.

Other preferred qualifications include a supervisory background and background that includes mentoring and training the next generation of researchers, including graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

Ensures that the Center retains its leadership in providing state-of-the-art services for academic and industrial clients. Ensure that accreditation requirements are properly maintained to preserve accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025:2017.

Supervise administrative and business office staff to ensure compliance with all university, state, federal and USG / BOR regulations.

Encourage the Center’s participation in collaborative, interdisciplinary work at UGA and its contributions to the teaching mission of the University. Oversee undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring, and ensure the offering of a robust K-12 outreach program.

Contributes to the strategic design, management, and implementation of the Center’s evaluations or assessments, scoping trips, and embedded research. Actively participates in both internal and external academic events related to the Center’s research.
