Department Summary

The Department of Nutrition, Food Science and Packaging offers three concentrations under the Bachelors of Science degree in Nutritional Science: Dietetics (Accredited by The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), Applied Nutrition and Food Sciences, and Food Management. The department also offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging.

The Department also offers a Master of Science degree in Nutritional Science with six different objectives as per student preference. There are approximately 400 students who are enrolled in the Nutrition, Food Science and Packaging Department. Please visit our website at www.sjsu.edu/nufspkg/

Required Qualifications

• Earned Doctoral degree in Nutrition or a closely related field is required for appointment.
• University-level teaching experience is required as well as professional work experience related to dietetics and nutrition especially in the area of nutritional epidemiology (experience and training in the biological aspects of nutrition, epidemiology, biostatistics, and select related disciplines).
• Demonstrated record of grant funding.
• Record of publications or strong potential for publications.
• Teaching experience appropriate to academic specialty.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to conduct impactful interdisciplinary research/scholarship.
• Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching, and other comparable experience.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Registered Dietitian (Certification or License) preferred but not required.
• We strongly encourage applicants whose research or scholarly interests focus on relationships between diet and disease in historically marginalized populations and intersect with any of the following: Health Equity, Health Infrastructures, and/or Sustainable Futures.
• An active and well-articulated research agenda, coupled with interest and ability to secure external grant funding.
• Experience working with racially diverse students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of groups within higher education, and the profession, shape patterns of participation and outcomes.
• Willingness to examine and re-mediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices including online instruction to more effectively engage and support historically underserved students.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to conduct both undergraduate and graduate mentoring.
  
  

Responsibilities

• Design and teach introductory and advanced level core courses in dietetics, nutritional epidemiology, community nutrition, applied nutrition, with experience in research methodology, biostatistics and courses in related areas as expertise permits.
• Responsible for grant writing, curriculum planning and development, student advising, committee responsibilities, and supervision of graduate student activities.
• Liaison with nutrition professionals to develop field experiences, graduate student projects, and curriculum support. The position will also involve significant mentoring and consulting with graduate students on quantitative and qualitative research methods, data analysis, grant applications and publications.
• Serve as faculty advisor for the undergraduate Nutrition Science Curriculum Specialization.
• Participate in professional organizations related to nutrition and related fields.
• Interdisciplinary collaboration preferred.
• Teaching effectiveness, service to students and university, and scholarly/professional achievement are required for retention, tenure, and promotion.
• Participate in shared governance usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments.
• Participate in curriculum development and teaching of other courses to meet the needs of the program and its diverse student population.
• Demonstrated awareness of and experience responding to the strengths and needs of a student population of great diversity—in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation—through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
