Lecturer in Tamil Language and Culture Division (Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group)

The Asian Languages and Cultures Academic Group (ALC) at the National Institute of Education in Singapore comprises the Chinese, Malay, and Tamil Divisions. ALC’s vision is to be a world class centre of excellence for Asian studies, especially in languages, cultures and education. We aim to nurture excellent teacher-researchers devoted to the development and promotion of mother tongue language education, Asian values and cultures as pillars of Singapore’s national identity and harmony. Mother tongue language teachers who enrol in our programmes can expect to receive a firm academic foundation with current knowledge in education research. ALC’s research places emphasis on high-impact interdisciplinary content, pedagogical innovation, challenging existing theories and extending the prevalent boundary of Asian studies.

The ALC Academic Group invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for faculty positions in the Tamil Language and Culture Division. The Tamil division of ALC provides training for Tamil language teachers through both pre-service and professional development programmes in Singapore.

Requirements
Successful candidates must have:

  • A doctoral degree in Tamil applied linguistics, second language learning and acquisition and pedagogy or other appropriate fields allied to teaching Tamil as a second language;

  • Native or near-native competence in Oral and Written Tamil and English;

  • Extensive experience in teaching Tamil as a Second Language (TL2);

  • Expertise in teaching Content Knowledge, such as Tamil phonology, grammar, lexicon (preferred);

  • Familiarity with the current Singapore Curriculum and the Singapore Education System (preferred);

  • A Diploma/Degree in Education (preferred);

  • TPCK- Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge;

  • Experience in Professional Development Programmes.

Responsibilities
Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Teach undergraduate and postgraduate level courses in Tamil (subject knowledge and related pedagogy in Tamil language);

  • Supervise and mentor undergraduate student teachers in their Practicum - School Teaching Practice;

  • Supervise Masters dissertation work;

  • Lead or collaborate in funded research projects, as well as maintain a strong research and publication record;

  • Undertake any administrative duties required as exigency of service;

  • Develop curriculum courses, develop and design teaching materials, e-learning materials, digital materials etc;

  • Be bilingual in Tamil-English.
