Senior Director of Faculty Research Activities in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is seeking a Senior Director of Faculty Research Activities who will be responsible for the direction and support of LAS faculty in research and scholarly activities, with particular emphasis on external funding for research. The position will work with faculty throughout the College to identify grant opportunities & develop successful major grant applications including the coordination of large multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary research proposals. The position will also work to improve both pre- and post-grant support to faculty, especially via its supervision of the Office of Social Science Research. The position requires an understanding of the policies & procedures for the submission and management of federal, state, and private grants.
The position will assist faculty in identifying grant opportunities & in developing successful major grant applications in the natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, humanities, & related fields. Will be responsible for grant writing and working with faculty to develop grant proposals for maximum budgetary & scholarly impact. Will review & edit draft proposals by faculty & staff for accuracy, completeness, stylistic consistency, logic, policy & budget. Will develop an understanding of university policies & procedures along with federal, state, private & other regulations required for grant submission & management. Will assist in the development & coordination of large multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary research proposals, including obtaining & interpreting guidelines, initiating meetings, collecting participant information, establishing timelines, & advancing narratives. Will develop workshop, group, & individual training for faculty to increase their success rate in obtaining major grants. Will work with other LAS staff & central campus units that oversee & manage external grants. Will supervise the Director of the Office of Social Science Research in their support of grant activity in the social sciences & humanities. Will oversee annual faculty activity reporting, including preparing summary reports of research & grant activity. Will perform other related duties & participate in special projects as assigned.
Qualifications: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the liberal arts & sciences, biomedical sciences, business administration, grant writing, and/or other related field. Related Master’s degree or PhD is preferred. A minimum of five (5) years work experience is required: experience must include successfully developing and writing grants in a higher education environment, along with an understanding of disciplinary standards of excellence at a research institution. Work experience can also include research, laboratory management, and/or project management in an institution of higher learning and/or research. Must have excellent communication, presentation, organizational, analytical and computer skills. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher), video conferencing, & other related software. Must be willing to embrace evolving information technologies of use to the position.
