The Department of Kinesiology at the University of
Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications and nominations
for the position of Department Chair. The Department seeks
exceptional candidates with (1) a record of high quality research
and scholarship, (2) excellence in undergraduate and graduate
education, (3) leadership experience and (4) a demonstrated
commitment to inclusion and diversity. Successful candidates will
demonstrate a clear vision for expanding the research enterprise of
the Department, including mentorship of junior faculty; a plan for
the continued success of graduate and undergraduate educational
programs; and the ability to build strong relationships with local
industry, community partners and other academic departments.
UTSA has recently embarked on a focused cluster
hiring plan in the area of Human Performance with hires in multiple
areas (Biomedical Engineering, Kinesiology, Mechanical Engineering,
Nutrition, Psychology, and Public Health). The Human Performance
initiative focuses on applied and fundamental research for the
health and well- being of the global community. This community
focused effort leverages strengths throughout San Antonio to
develop research that can positively impact human performance for
community health, elite sport, and military function. The search
for a department chair in Kinesiology is one of three searches as
part of this cluster hire plan for Fall 2021 and compliments last
year’s successful searches that resulted in three new faculty
focused on human performance.
The Kinesiology Department, the College for Health,
Community and Policy, and UTSA are focused on increasing national
and international recognition as an institution of research
excellence. The Kinesiology Department currently has 12 full-time
faculty, one full-time lecturer, and 1700 undergraduate students
and over 100 graduate students in an M.S. in Health and Kinesiology
program (jointly administered with the Department of Public

Qualifications
The required qualifications of the successful
candidate are a PhD in Kinesiology, any of its sub-disciplines
(e.g. biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor development, motor
learning, sport and exercise psychology, physical education) or a
related field, outstanding research and teaching records that
warrant an appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure
(contingent upon Board of Regents approval), experience in an
academic leadership/administrative position, and a demonstrated
commitment to inclusion and diversity.
The preferred qualifications are experience in an
academic supervisory capacity (ideally Department Chair); knowledge
of innovative curriculum development and implementation; mentorship
of graduate students and junior faculty; experience with fiscal
management responsibilities; and experience with external and
community partners.
Compensation will be commensurate with applicant
qualifications.
The College for Health, Community and Policy (HCaP),
founded in 2020, includes the departments of Sociology, Psychology,
Social Work, Public Health, Kinesiology, Demography, Public
Administration, Criminology/Criminal Justice and a Coordinated
Program in Dietetics. The mission of the HCaP is to improve the
wellbeing of the world around us and to develop recommendations for
