Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Advisor I, Financial Aid Workforce Programs provides direction and guidance toward meaningful educational plans which are compatible with a student’s life goals. This is a continuous and consistent process which is built upon the basis of frequent, accumulated personal contacts between advisor and advisee.



ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists students in clarifying personal and career goals, developing consistent educational goals, and evaluating the progress toward established goals
  2. Advises prospective and current students (by phone, email, and face-to-face) on academic requirements, course selection, application processes and school policies/procedures for all Allied Health, Public Service and Nursing programs
  3. Collaborates with Program Directors to provide information sessions for each program. Makes presentations (at schools, meetings, etc.) as needed
  4. Communicates with students and/or college administration on a regular basis to track student success and progress. Updates and maintains student accounts, advising notes, and/or reports for Division leadership. Provides monthly reports on planning, progress and evaluation of services provided
  5. Counsels students who are struggling, as advised by Program Directors, in order to retain students. Utilizes the resources of the college and refers students to the appropriate support services and involving others within the institution to assist with their success
  6. Provides structured, proactive advising and outreach to all student cohorts to insure successful progression through programs. These programs include: EMS (EMT-Basic, Paramedic, and the non-cohort EMS degree), Fire (Fire Academy and the non-cohort Fire Science degree), Sonography/Echocardiography, Vascular Certificate, Radiology, MRIT Certificate, Medical Assisting and Nursing (LVN and ADN)
  7. Works with Liaison to insure smooth transition from general academic advising to Workforce advising. Keeps up with updates, training and program changes. Attends meetings and trainings as needed
  8. Responsible for other reasonable, related duties as assigned


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency with common office software
  • High level of customer service
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to accuracy and detail for tracking of student success and student educational plans
  • Ability to communicate and work well with all levels of students
  • Ability to prioritize duties




PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.



WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 1 year of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be in, and maintain, good standing with the Department of Education for continued employment




PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Previous experience working with students who have unique barriers and experience in assisting these students with their educational success


Salary

Hiring salary range is $37,270 - $45,660

Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions. Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.
