General Summary/Purpose:

Full-time position in an exciting and fast-paced Systems Neuroscience Laboratory in Biomedical Engineering.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will be held solely accountable by Principal Investigator for all laboratory functions at both on-campus and off-campus sites.
  • Responsible for the coordination of all activities in a systems neuroscience laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Medical Campus.
  • The laboratory is active in two research areas: 1) behavioral testing of auditory perception and 2) neurophysiological investigations of auditory processing.
  • Additionally, the laboratory maintains two animal breeding colonies.
  • Responsible for orientation and training of new and temporary laboratory personnel in general duties, protocol specific laboratory skills, and equipment usage.
  • Maintain animal breeding colonies.
  • Keep track of animal weights & health records, inspect animals' health, administer physical exams and medications, injections, blood draws, etc.
  • Will communicate and coordinate findings with veterinarians and Animal Resources staff to maintain good husbandry procedures, address colony needs and all animal issues.
  • Work as an integral member of the research team overseeing researchers’ procedures for handling, injecting, and surgically preparing animals.
  • Assist researchers in transporting animals, preparing experimental apparatus, inspecting and maintaining animals’ health, and other tasks as necessary for behavioral and/or physiological experiments.
  • Responsible for assisting researchers with preparation and conducting of sterile surgeries required by the research.
  • Monitor anesthesia during surgeries, oversee the animal’s recovery from surgery, and provide post-operative care.
  • Contribute to development of laboratory systems and methods.
  • Prepare documentation of methods and procedures.
  • Provide professional expertise in the creation and revision of laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and protocols.
  • Oversee inventory of laboratory supplies, including intake of new orders, record keeping, and working with technicians to ensure timely ordering of supplies.
  • Ensure compliance with the University’s suite of courses in laboratory safety, biohazard, and animal welfare.
  • Demonstrate organization, problem solving, resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Manage laboratory systems consistent with JHMI policies.
  • Occasionally lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or related field required.
  • Three (3) years of related experience required.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) with related graduate research may substitute for one year of experience.For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft office suite.
  • Must have concise, clear, and professional communication (both verbal and written).
  • Excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work independently and cooperatively as a team member.
  • Willingness to work on some weekends and holidays for animal care related tasks.
  • Must be willing to travel between animal colony sites (up to 3 miles).

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
