General Summary/Purpose:

The Sr. Community Outreach Specialist for the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (JHADRC) works under the supervision of the Leader of the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement (ORE) Core of the JHADRC.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Research Projects:

  • The position involves a wide range of activities related to outreach, recruitment and retention on behalf of the JHADRC and associated projects.
  • One of the primary goals of JHADRC is to increase knowledge about the differences between normal aging, mild memory problems, and memory disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
  • The JHADRC is responsible for conducting annual visits with participants, which includes clinical and cognitive assessments, blood draws and the collection of measures that provide information about the status of the brain (e.g., magnetic resonance imaging, cerebrospinal fluid).
  • The participants also agree to be contacted about participation in studies associated with the JHADRC.

Position Responsibilities:

  • The position involves the following responsibilities:
  • (1) assisting with events that provide general visibility for the JHADRC, including community conferences and health fairs
  • (2) assisting with the design and implementation of virtual outreach activities, including the JHADRC Facebook page, Twitter account and newsletter
  • (3) assisting with the recruitment of diverse research participants for the JHADRC, which includes giving talks about brain health, memory & aging and Alzheimer’s disease by collaborating with community partners who provide in-person and virtual recruitment opportunities
  • (4) completing eligibility screenings with potential participants to determine if they meet enrollment criteria and assisting in scheduling potential participants
  • (5) tracking and reporting enrollment progress on a monthly basis
  • (6) assisting with programmatic efforts to increase participation of JHADRC participants in biomarker protocols (i.e., brain imaging and cerebrospinal fluid collection) and brain donation
  • (7) assisting with the planning and execution of new and existing outreach and education programs, including those sponsored by the JHADRC Memory and Aging Community Advisory Board (MACAB)
  • (8) providing assistance to studies associated with the JHADRC by identifying potential participants and providing guidance with respect to recruitment strategies
  • (9) assisting with activities that are important for participant retention (e.g., meeting participants at the beginning of their study visits, assisting with the organization of annual retention events, and sending targeted mailings)
  • (10) assisting with activities to maintain and expand the involvement of community partners, including the MACAB. As noted above, these responsibilities will be carried out under the supervision of the leader of the JHADRC ORE Core, but also requires close collaboration with the faculty and staff of the JHADRC Clinical Core, as well as other junior and senior faculty, nurses and physicians, and related study personnel.

These responsibilities involve travel in the Greater Baltimore area, including travel between several Johns Hopkins medical campuses and travel to community events. A flexible daily schedule will sometimes be necessary, based on staff and faculty availability, and the time and location of community outreach/education events.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in related discipline required.
  • Some related experience required.
  • Experience in a health related field and in community outreach is important, as well as the ability to adapt milestones to evolving project priorities.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills, and the ability to work with a team of junior and senior individuals.
  • Must be able to connect with others and interact respectfully and in a culturally competent way with diverse cultural and socio-economic older populations.
  • Requires good organizational skills and good computer skills.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
