Job Summary

The Smead Program Director plans, leads, manages, coordinates and assesses all elements of the Smead Program in the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences. The program is a cornerstone of our focus on encouraging excellence in aerospace education, research, and societal impact. This position is part of a high-performing professional and academic team working to elevate the department’s reputation, engage industry and other partners, and recruit the next-generation of world-class aerospace engineering students and faculty to the Boulder campus. The director will work under minimal supervision to effectively implement all aspects of this program, which includes student and faculty recruitment and mentorship, development of enrichment activities, marketing, planning, budgeting, and reporting.

Who We Are

CU Boulder's Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences is nationally known for teaching and research that address both challenges and opportunities facing the aerospace profession. Students work extensively on hands-on experiments in the Integrated Teaching and Learning Laboratory and design projects alongside expert faculty in the department's world-class research centers. CU aerospace alumni are working at top companies and research labs, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, The Boeing Company, and Lockheed Martin.

We are home to 42-tenure track, research, and instructional faculty, over 200 graduate students and 400 undergraduates. Our vibrant community of engineers and scientists tackle challenges in aerospace technology and science.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Smead Program Strategic Planning, Advising, and Administration
  • Advises the Smead Aerospace Department Chair and plays a meaningful role in the Smead Scholars program strategy, department long-range planning and partnership development.
  • Directs the implementation, administration, and evaluation of the program.
  • Develops financial strategy and long-range financial planning for the program.
  • Develops and delivers financial and programmatic stewardship reports on program progression in partnership with the Advancement department.
  • Develops, maintains, and controls annual budget and calendar of Smead Programming to achieve program goals.

Development and Marketing
  • Researches and develops strategies to improve the national reputation and stature of department, college, and university as consistent with the goals of the Smead Program.
  • Directs the national communication and brand strategy.
  • Represents the Smead Program and Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences Department to the broader university, external community, and other colleagues.
  • Conducts market research and works on the development/implementation of marketing and recruitment activities, enabling programs, services, and/or events to meet organizational objectives.

Smead Scholar and Faculty Support
  • Recruits, selects, and develops recognition activities and events for Scholars, Faculty, Fellows, and Visiting Professors.
  • Serves as the central coordinator for Smead Scholars, ensuring access to tutoring, mentoring or other services as needed to support academic success.
  • Provides career counseling and assists with job placement for Smead Scholars.
  • Maintains regular communication with Smead Alumni, ensuring long-term continuity of the community.


What We Can Offer

The salary range is $73,000 - $113,000 commensurate with experience.

What We Require

Bachelor’s degree. At least five years of relevant experience in aerospace engineering, space sciences or related area of specialization. A combination of relevant post-baccalaureate education, training, and/or experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

  • Skilled in project manager with the capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Detail-focused with strong ability to understand constituent needs and lead teams toward a common goal.


What We Would Like You To Have

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Successful track record of developing program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Experience with project management including planning and managing program budgets.
  • Experience in an academic and/or higher education setting, especially in Aerospace Engineering.
  • Previous success in product, program and/or services marketing or recruitment.
  • Undergraduate degree in STEM subject area; master’s degree in a STEM-related field very useful.
