Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The division of University Advancement responds to the needs of a variety of external and internal constituents in achieving its primary goals to: 1) Increase private financial support for prioritized university programs and activities, and 2) Improve external relations for the university through effective board management and donor stewardship. The division strives to raise funds, as outlined by the Chancellor’s vision statement and strategic plan, from the private sector to further the university mission of pursuing the resources that will enable our faculty and students to excel, and becoming intensely regionally engaged. In doing so, the division plans strategically to facilitate the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of all constituencies, and seeks to positively promote the university. The division’s fundraising efforts are enhanced by effective partnerships with components of the campus community as well as external audiences including alumni, parents, corporations, foundations, legislators, volunteer board members and friends. Development areas include major gifts, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, annual giving, UNCW constituent liaison and alumni relations. Prospect management and research, advancement services, university events and boards, and the business office are support services for the fundraising activities of the division.

Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The university is preparing to publicly launch a comprehensive fundraising campaign at the beginning of 2021, and the Assistant Director of Annual Giving position will help inspire annual philanthropic investment among university constituents, especially our recent graduates, students and employees. Successful candidates will help convey important campaign priorities to key constituents and help University Advancement build momentum around participation goals.
We are seeking a highly collaborative candidate who can implement strategies that resonate with on-campus audiences, as well as someone who can contribute new strategies for student giving and is interested in helping to implement a Student Alumni Association that will transcend the campaign period.
The Assistant Director of Annual Giving will provide overall assistance in managing comprehensive fundraising programs.
The Assistant Director of Annual Giving will assist the Director in development and execution of all annual fundraising efforts.
The major avenues of fundraising that the Assistant Director will help manage are:
• Electronic Initiatives: assist the Director of Annual Giving with developing, creating and implementing online initiatives to solicit and/or steward any or all constituents. These include but are not limited to: Online Giving, Email Solicitations, Crowdfunding, One-Day Giving Challenges, digital ads and other emerging technologies.
• In close collaboration with Alumni Relations, oversee the implementation of a newly created Student Alumni Association and provide supervision (or take on an advisory role) for any affiliated student groups, leaders and/or volunteers that are key to the success of this new student philanthropy and engagement model.
• Phonathon: assist the Director of Annual Giving with management of daily phonathon activities and provide recommendations when necessary.
• Direct Mail: assist the Director of Annual Giving with drafting, editing and producing direct mail appeals, including but not limited to segmented letters for alumni, parents, friends, reminders and giving societies.
2) Affinity Drives
Under the guidance and direction of the Director, the Assistant Director of Annual Giving will provide overall management for day-to-day fundraising based on audience segmentation and affinity with a special focus on using emerging technologies and giving tactics that help increase student, alumni and employee gifts.
Duties will include developing a comprehensive schedule to include marketing, awareness, developing appropriate solicitation pieces, establishing key performance indicators and tracking progress.
3) Office Management
The Assistant Director of Annual Giving will assist the Director in overall management of Office of Annual Giving, including but not limited to:
Budgeting, events, research, vendors, giving societies, electronic initiatives, direct mail, etc., and will be responsible for specific annual fundraising goals.
4) Supervision/Volunteer Management
The Assistant Director of Annual Giving will hold a key role in the supervision of student worker(s) and any affiliated student groups. This may include tracking and approving hours worked and collaborating with others in University Advancement as well as campus partners.
While a bulk of work hours will be Monday-Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM, this position will be expected to be available some evening and weekend hours in order to effectively engage on-campus audiences, especially students.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Power Point required.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
2-3 years of fundraising experience, Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, Adobe Photoshop, Email services.
The ideal candidate will have marketing or promotional experience with emphasis on the 18 – 30 year old demographic, experience with managing or supervising student workers and volunteer groups.
