Assistant/Associate Professor

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

The Bouve College of Health Sciences has over 200 faculty members, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. It is the leading national model for education and research in the health, psychosocial, and biomedical sciences and supports the University's mission of educating students for a life of fulfillment and accomplishment and creating and translating knowledge to meet global and societal needs.

The Department of Health Sciences is an interdisciplinary department in the Bouve College of Health Sciences, one of nine colleges at Northeastern University. We provide a world-class education in a broad range of public health and clinical careers that promote the health and well-being of individuals, communities, and populations in culturally diverse contexts. We are committed to evidence-based research and research translation to eliminate health disparities. Our department is a unique, transdisciplinary setting that incorporates teaching, learning, and serving, in a rapidly evolving, multicultural environment that includes perspectives based on diversity by race, ethnicity, class, ability, language, gender, sexuality, age and nationality. The Department has over 40 faculty and offers a CEPH-accredited undergraduate program in Health Sciences, three masters programs (MS in Exercise Science, MS in Health Informatics, and CEPH-accredited Masters in Public Health), and two doctoral programs (PhDs in Population Health and Personal Health Informatics). The Department is home to approximately 600 undergraduate majors in the Health Science B.S. and 300 graduate students. It is playing a central role in expanding public health programs.

About the Opportunity:
The Department of Health Sciences at Northeastern University seeks candidates for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in the emerging area of Digital Health Phenotyping. Research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the development or deployment of technology to quantify mental or physical health behavior in natural settings; technology-enabled, tailored interventions; personal health informatics; and human-computer interaction for health. Aspiring candidates may be developing methods or applications related to measuring and interpreting real-world mental health or lifestyle behavior using personal digital devices, including smartphones and consumer health devices, or use computational modeling on such data to enhance our understanding of the interaction between behavior and health. We are especially interested in the intersection of these domains and efforts to understand and reduce health disparities among marginalized populations.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary department committed to excellence in research and teaching in our CEPH-accredited Bachelors and Masters programs in Public Health and our two Doctoral Programs in Personal Health Informatics and Population Health. The successful candidate will also engage in curriculum development and assessment, classroom and online teaching, serve on capstone and dissertation committees, and engage in service to the Department, College, and University. We also seek individuals who can leverage their research agenda to facilitate collaborations with other Colleges interested in digital health (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Humanities) and bring innovative pedagogical methods into undergraduate and graduate student teaching. The tenure home is in the Department of Health Sciences with the likelihood of a joint appointment in another suitable department or school.

Qualifications:
A Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in Health Informatics, Health Communications, Public Health, Population Health, Behavioral Science, Information Science, or a related field required by the appointment start date. Candidates must articulate or demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate/graduate teaching excellence and a record of interdisciplinary scholarly achievement commensurate with rank. The successful applicant will have a robust research portfolio and demonstrate extramural funding or the promise to secure such funding.

Please include a letter of interest, CV with names of 3 references, and statements on (1) teaching, (2) research, and (3) contributions to achieving a diverse and inclusive academic environment. For questions about the position, please contact Dr. Matthew Goodwin, Search Committee Chair, at m.goodwin@northeastern.edu. Applications received by December 4, 2020 will receive full consideration. Applications will be reviewed until the position is filled.
