The Division of Anthropology at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Cultural Anthropology with appointment to begin Fall 2021.

Position

We invite applications from scholars with a research specialization in the anthropological study of borders, borderlands, and migration. Additional research and teaching interests in one or more of the following areas would be an asset: legal and political anthropology; violence and security; labor and social class; critical race theory; and applied anthropology. We are also interested in candidates with expertise in using qualitative data analysis and research software. Preferred geographic area is Mexico-U.S. border.

The ideal candidate will engage with critical questions in anthropology and demonstrate attention to the broader context of anthropological research in contemporary society. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a wide array of courses—including introductory courses, upper-division undergraduate courses, graduate seminars, and courses in their area(s) of specialization—and contribute to graduate and undergraduate mentorship. Applicants will ideally be interested in engaging students in local research projects, applied projects, or internships.

Faculty members teach and advise graduate and undergraduate students and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. Faculty members are responsible for producing scholarship/creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require excellent teaching and excellent research, including publication in peer-reviewed outlets relevant to anthropology, and participation in service to the broader academic community.

CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the development and teaching of introductory and core courses in the discipline, and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. Specific courses that this person will teach may include ANTH 102: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology; ANTH 304: Traditional Cultures of the World; as well as theory and methods courses, which are taught frequently, by several faculty members. They will also teach courses in the major that reflect the candidate's areas of expertise, including ANTH 482: Globalization and Culture Change and ANTH 409: Applied Anthropology, as well as courses at the graduate level. We welcome this person to develop new curriculum in their area of expertise. This person will also be responsible for producing scholarship / creative work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, serve on committees, and participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Anthropology or an interdisciplinary field with primary expertise in anthropology and ethnographic methods. ABDs may apply but must show evidence that the degree will be completed by the appointment date
  • Specialization in the anthropological study of borders, borderlands, and migration
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience at the college or university level
  • A strong record of scholarly accomplishments appropriate to the level of appointment
  • Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarship, and service
  • Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues and community
  • Demonstrated contributions to diversity through research, teaching, and service

    The Department

    The Cultural Anthropology Program constitutes one portion of the Division of Anthropology, alongside Archaeology and Evolutionary Anthropology. The Division of Anthropology at CSUF has a long tradition of excellent undergraduate and graduate education. We offer many opportunities for student engagement through student clubs, research with faculty, study abroad opportunities, and internships in the community. We are a broad department that emphasizes multifaceted approaches drawing from across the humanities and social and life sciences. Our curriculum includes coursework representative of the four fields of Anthropology. Our faculty, students, and staff have received a wide range of honors and awards.

    Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications and is subject to budgetary authorization and any California State University System faculty contract increases.
