Basic Function:

The primary responsibility of a faculty member at Northern Virginia Community College is to provide quality instruction for the students. The major emphasis is on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms, laboratories, individual conferences, and related activities. Faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity to become better workers and better citizens. NOVA faculty may be assigned to any campus based upon enrollment and staffing needs. The position is available for one academic year, with possible performance-based yearly contract renewals.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching various courses in the Computer Science field of study. Courses are offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning environments. All faculty members must be available to teach day, evening and weekend classes. This is a nine-month restricted appointment with a teaching load of 15 credits per semester. This position may be assigned to teach courses at multiple campuses, and will have a primary assignment at either the Alexandria, Woodbridge or Manassas campus.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Computer Science or a Master’s degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Computer Science coursework. Prior teaching experience, especially at the community college or university level. Candidates must be familiar with Canvas or comparable course management systems.
The successful candidate must be willing to teach a combination of day, evening, weekend, and online classes with the ability to be flexible to work at any of the College’s locations. Successful completion and passing of a criminal background check is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous community college teaching experience. Experience developing curriculum. Previous experience teaching in a hybrid and online formats. Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency. Graduate level coursework in mathematics, data science or data analytics.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction. Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills. Successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, the ability to work in a collegial manner with a highly diverse faculty, staff and student population and the ability to teach in an urban community college setting. Applicants must have commitment to provide academic advising to students and help develop sound academic plans for students.
