CHAIR, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders 

The University is seeking an innovative chair to direct the department. The individual should be committed to excellence in education, able to foster relationships among the department, college, university, and community, and understand the needs of faculty, staff, and students. The chair is responsible for the overall management and operation of the department including facilities, personnel, and budget, as well as active participation in advising, teaching, scholarly activities, and service. We are focusing on a leader who will continue to support the department’s leadership in advanced programming (i.e. distance learning, interdisciplinary studies, certificate program) with a strong research agenda and funding history, and interest in minority aspects of communication disorders. This is a 12-month position.


  • Earned research doctorate with emphasis in speech language pathology, or speech, language and hearing sciences preferred;
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and team management skills;
  • Capacity for program administration;
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarly activities;
  • Academic, research, and clinical experience in the field of communication sciences disorders;
  • Teaching assignments will be based on area of expertise and individual interests (undergraduate/graduate);
  • Active involvement in professional organizations related to the field;
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence with eligibility for Washington DC Licensure in Speech-Language Pathology;
  • Eligible for appointment as a tenured faculty member at the full professor level.

About the Department:

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is housed in a private HBCU with top ranking and an international reputation. The university was founded in 1867 by an act of congress and remains only of one of two, non-military higher education institutions that receives federal funding. In the 2014 edition of Best colleges and National Universities, Howard ranked 142 among all colleges and university in the United States.

The department focuses on multicultural and multilingual aspects of communication sciences and disorders having programs at the undergraduate level (Minor in Communication Sciences and Disorders), and graduate levels (master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Ph. D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders). A new undergraduate to graduate five-year program commenced in the Fall of 2016. The department is ASHA CAA accredited. The faculty and students engage in a wide variety of research in many aspects of communication sciences and disorders with a focus on multicultural and multilingual aspects. The department has links with a number of local and national institutions where students and faculty conduct research, engage in clinical practice and carry out experiential activities. These institutions include Howard University Hospital, the National Institutes of Health, the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association, local area hospitals and local area schools.
