Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.
Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.
About the Opportunity:
A post-doctoral position in the general area of material science and applied mechanics is available in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Northeastern University. The aim of the work will be to contribute to development of fatigue test criteria and procedures for cold spray repaired surfaces. Research into developing novel and conventional fatigue testing procedures and modifying cold-spray process parameters to maximize the fatigue life of cold spray repaired components will be conducted. Experience in materials testing, heat treatment, mechanical and microstructural characterization, continuum damage mechanics and finite element method are required for the position. The post-doctoral fellow will interact with a network of PIs, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students working in continuum mechanics, molecular dynamics, metallurgy and materials testing. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit a letter describing their relevant experience, CV and the names of three references. The position is available for 1 year with possible extension for another.
Performs basic or applied research of a limited scope, primarily using existing theories and methods. Assists the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants. Maintains the laboratory and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. Primary responsibility is ensuring that the research is complete. The appointment generally does not extend beyond two years.
Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of two senior scholars. Must have laboratory experience in the research area and be able to work with a large group of lab personnel. Must be US citizen or Green card holder.
The mission of the Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (CSAML) at Northeastern University is to advance the state-of-the-art in cold spray technology through experimental and theoretical research by engaging with NU faculty and graduate students and through critical partnerships with government and industry sponsors. Since its inception at the end of 2017, the lab has been supported by projects from the Army Research Laboratories, NAVSEA, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Draper, Raytheon, Eaton, H.F. Webster and IPG. In addition, the lab has a strong research and operation partnership with VRC Metal Systems. The lab currently employs two full-time research engineers and a fulltime laboratory technician.
