The Organization           

Celebrating 60 years since its’ founding in 1960, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) is a major regional university and has become a key institution advancing public Higher Education in western Michigan and the economic growth and prosperity of the region.   Today, the University has campus locations in Allendale, Grand Rapids and Holland serving over 23,000 students, and 3000+ faculty and staff.  Under President Philomena Mantilla, GVSU is pivoting in its strategic direction and positioning itself as a more nimble, entrepreneurial enterprise working to deliver greater value and meet an increasingly diverse student population and during a time of slowing student growth.  GVSU seeks to be at the forefront of knowledge educating students by transforming its organization from a traditional approach to one that emphasizes creativity and innovation and rapid deployment of new educational program offerings.  As an organization, GVSU is transforming its approach to managing talent and technology across the organization and seeks a new CHRO to help guide this transformation and manage the change. 

CHRO Mission

The mission for the new CHRO is to elevate their role and their department as strategic advisors to GVSU’s senior leadership team and the broader management organization.  New strategic thinking will be vital as GVSU seeks to capitalize on organizational changes implemented post Covid-19, while anticipating changes in its core student markets and opportunities in emerging sectors.  The CHRO will also be a vital leader to guide and manage organizational change across many functions and activities and particularly in support of new initiatives in recruitment, leadership development, employee onboarding, DEI, equity in compensation, and HR business processes.  The CHRO will be an important voice guiding shared governance with faculty, and administration while also managing relationships with three unions representing administrative and support personnel.  The new CHRO will have a vital role to guiding and supporting the transformation of GVSU into a top-tier performing institution in Higher Education.


Ideal candidates for the next CHRO of GVSU will bring rich experience in several key areas including:

  • Experience guiding HR strategy and leading change across a business unit, preferably multiple units.
  • Known for creative ideas that increased organizational agility and greater performance in its market
  • A broad network of connections and resources with leading edge knowledge of HR ideas and practices that can be brought to bear quickly on GVSU needs and opportunities
  • A track record of working both internally and externally communicating ideas and intellectual capital for broader dissemination and use
  • Experience working with a host of experts in their fields of knowledge and demonstrated success guiding them advance organizational effectiveness and performance
  • Ability to work with a lean HR staff and outside resources to drive change and advance GVSU’s capabilities as an agile, high performing organization

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Master’s degree in Human Resources Management, Management, Business Administration, Organizational Development or a related field.
  • A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible human resources experience as well as supervisory experience in a Human Resources leadership and management capacity.
  • Extensive knowledge of benefits, workforce development, classification, compensation, human resources technology systems, organizational development, policy review, employee relations, labor relations, training and development, industry trends, employment law, federal rules and regulations governing human resources administration. Experience in higher education a plus but not required.
  • Excellent budget preparation and fiscal management skills.
