Full-Time Faculty Position in Art Therapy

The Indiana University Herron School of Art and Design at Indianapolis invites applications for the Cindy Simon Skjodt Chair in Art Therapy to begin August 2021. The Chair will reside in the Art Therapy program, which offers a Master of Arts degree. This relatively new position provides the opportunity and resources to help expand upon and further develop a creative and innovative art therapy program with unique access to clinical, research and community partners, enhancing student and faculty experiences. The Cindy Simon Skjodt Chair will be an accomplished Art Therapist at the professor or associate professor level with an established research record. Rank and salary are commensurate with professional experience, teaching, and current professional status. The endowment fund provides discretionary funding for the professor’s research, graduate research assistance, library resources and acquisitions and other requirements of an active scholar and teacher.

Art Therapy Program Profile
Herron’s 60-credit Master of Arts in Art Therapy Program embraces the impact that creative therapies have upon the health and mental well-being of those we engage. Housed within a school of art and design and located on a Health and Life Science campus, the program recognizes art’s ability to contribute to healing and its unique ability to serve as a vehicle for engaging and connecting with patients, family members and other caregivers in meaningful and effective ways. Our relationship with both urban and rural communities provide a wide range of opportunities and provide a unique and diverse learning environment. This creates fertile territory for pedagogical advances and contributions to the broader field, regionally, nationally and internationally. The Art Therapy program was established in 2012 and prepares students with the academic and internship requirements and experiences for pursuing the credentials of ATR-P and LMHCA. 

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be an active participant in a cohesive faculty team with varied interests and experiences within the Art Therapy Department.  Responsibilities include teaching, student recruitment and advising, and curriculum development; contributing to the School and University through service; and ongoing engagement in scholarly, creative, and professional activities. The ideal candidate will also contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or unique set of experiences that expands the intellectual conversation of the field. The typical course load for a tenured faculty is 2/3 with flexibility of course offerings in relation to research and service activities.

Education Requirement: Master’s degree in art therapy required, doctoral degree in art therapy or closely related field preferred; ATR-BC credentials required; Indiana state license eligible.

Qualifications 
Required:  Human service experience as an art therapist; demonstrated scholarly, studio, and professional engagement; prior teaching, supervising and advising students and programmatic research, ongoing scholarly/creative work, community collaborations, programmatic work, and service to university and/or professional organizations. 

In addition to a solid grounding in direct art therapy practice, the ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise as evidenced by scholarship in areas such as Teaching, Service, and Research and/or Creative Activities. Key areas of interest to the department include:

• commitment to community and socially engaged practices
• Identity diversity, social cognitive theory, and intersectionality
• ability to work with colleagues from across the school, campus, and community
• integrative forms of art therapy that seek to serve diverse communities and stakeholders
