Job Description

The University Attorney is generally responsible for the legal affairs of the institution, and provides legal advice to the University and its internal constituents on a variety of legal matters (e.g. employment, discrimination, Title IX, student affairs, accessibility, privacy and security, property, contracts, partnerships, real estate, compliance with local, state, and federal law, among many others). The University Attorney manages responses to subpoenas and other document production requests (ensuring compliance with applicable laws on open meeting, public records, conflicts of interest, etc.). The University Attorney also reviews and provides advice on University policies and procedures, and promotes good governance by assisting the Board of Governors as needed with bylaws and policies, committee resolutions and other Board work such as facilitating Board of Governor orientation and training.

The University Attorney oversees the Title IX Coordinator, serves as a member of the Emergency Management team, and may be deployed in such other supervisory and committee membership roles as may be appropriate based on expertise and needs of the institution.

The University Attorney serves as representative or agent of the University where legal expertise and business judgment are required, and assists the Office of the Attorney General in representing the University in litigation where applicable. The University Attorney will also be involved in legislative advocacy, governmental relations, and related matters. As needed, the University Attorney will find and coordinate with appropriate outside counsel for specialized expertise.

Required Qualifications

Juris Doctorate (JD) degree from an ABA accredited law school.
Current license to practice in Missouri OR ability to become licensed in Missouri within a reasonable time from the date of hire.
Five (5) years of progressively responsible legal practice experience.
Two (2) years of work experience in, or related to, higher education or governmental entities.

• Good judgment and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to operate independently and collaboratively with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders.
• Commitments to maintain high level of confidentiality.
• Effective negotiation skills.
• Strong time management skills; ability to handle multiple tasks with accuracy while adhering to tight deadlines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, and Outlook) and ability to operate other web-based platforms for situational awareness, information management, and mass notification.

Preferred Qualifications

Practice experience in the area of higher education law, preferably as in-house counsel for a college or university.
