Department Summary

SJSU’s Department of Urban and Regional Planning is interested in receiving applications for a Lecturer position opening to teach introductory and advanced courses in Remote Sensing. Course description is as follows:

GEOG 181 (3 units) Remote Sensing: Digital Analysis: Digital image systems and application to earth resource problems. Emphasis on non-photographic sensors, including digital manipulation and image enhancement. Integration of digital imagery with geographic information systems. Lecture 2 hours/ lab 3 hours

Brief Description of Duties

Lecturers should be able to demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity including but not limited to differences in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Lecturers are expected to organize their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common virtual space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. Lecturers will be provided access to this system prior to the semester start date. Training in the use of LMS is also provided by SJSU’s e-campus.

Lecturers are expected to deliver course content following a schedule agreed upon with the Department Chair. Instruction includes lecturers and lab-based or project-based assignments. The lecturer is responsible for assigning the final grades.

Required Qualifications
  • Applicant should hold an earned Master’s Degree in Geography or a closely related discipline (PhD preferred). Professional experience in addition to a Master’s degree and previous teaching experience at the collegiate level will be highly valued.
  • Applicants must be able to prepare and deliver lectures in a conventional (in class) or online modalities and teach the use of remote sensing software through lab-based or project-based assignments.
  • Applicants must be well organized and able to deliver a supportive learning experience for our highly diverse student body.
  • Ability to teach and evaluate adult learners. Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Geography or closely related field.

Conditional Appointment

Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.

Salary Range - To commensurate with experience.
