The University of Virginia School of Data Science has an exciting opportunity for a tenured Professor who will serve as the inaugural Quantitative Foundation Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs. This is a pivotal position in the development of the School, one which was founded with support from the largest gift in the university’s 200 year history from the Quantitative Foundation. The Associate Dean will also hold the faculty rank of Professor of Data Science.
Reporting directly to the Dean, the Associate Dean will help advance the graduate programs, academic curriculum and learning environment, develop faculty policies and procedures, lead faculty development efforts, and pursue an active research and teaching agenda. Candidates must have a PhD in a data science related field, be recognized as a national figure in data science related research and teaching, have expertise in the development of policies and procedures, and be a collaborative, supportive manager and mentor. The Associate Dean holds a 5-year renewable endowed chair appointment.
The Associate Dean will be a key leader, and represent a new type of School - a School without Walls - on institutional committees and collaborate with faculty and researchers across the University and beyond to grow highly respected research and curricular agendas. As the School has a national presence, the Associate Dean also will represent the School nationally and internationally to expand its reputation and elevate the learning, research and working environment for our students and leadership team.
The Associate Dean will be responsible for the educational curriculum, both online and on campus. The School currently offers a Master’s degree, both in residence in Charlottesville and online, as well as dual degrees. The Associate Dean will lead the process of developing new degree and continuing education programs. This includes a PhD program, undergraduate minor and 4-year degrees, and life-long learning programs in the northern Virginia area. The individual in this position will oversee curricular assessment and revision and will manage all student affairs activities.
This Associate Dean will support the teaching and research mission of the School by managing the student experience, from admission to graduation to career services. The individual who holds this position is responsible for student advising procedures and developing undergraduate and graduate student research experiences to enrich the learning environment.
A primary responsibility will entail faculty governance and faculty affairs, including participating in faculty workload planning and administration. Because the School is new, this includes responsibility for developing processes enabling faculty hiring, reappointment, promotion, tenure, annual reviews, merit increases, faculty development, leave administration, policy compliance, grievance procedures, and assignment of teaching responsibilities.
As a direct report to the Dean and member of the Dean’s Cabinet, the position will participate in the strategic planning and implementation of priorities that advance the national presence and success of the School.
As a researcher, the tenured professor will undertake a vibrant and viable research program in a specific area of data science, with an expectation of securing external funding.
In summary, this important hire represents a unique opportunity to shape a School committed to pushing the envelope in higher education in a field of unprecedented growth and opportunity.
