Diversity Giving Officer
The Jackson Laboratory
Diversity Giving Officer
Bar Harbor, Maine · Farmington, Connecticut · Sacramento, California
The Jackson Laboratory (JAX) is a truly world-leading, nonprofit biomedical research institution with a bold mission—to discover precise genomic solutions to disease, and to empower the global biomedical research community in the shared quest to improve human health. JAX is dedicated to discovering the genetic basis of diseases like cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, addiction, and immunological disorders to:
- extend our lives
- improve our health
- and, ultimately, provide personalized therapies to help treat, cure, or prevent disease.
This 90-year enterprise has grown dramatically over the past several years, opening new centers in Farmington, Connecticut and Shanghai, China. 2020 has presented new challenges and opportunities for JAX’s more than 2,400 employees and 400 faculty. The laboratory has applied its extensive genetic expertise, large-scale research capacity, analytical power, and collaborative culture to provide scientists with new insights into predicting and curing an unprecedented global public health crisis. In the face of COVID-19, JAX has quickly pivoted to partner with hospitals and health care facilities in Connecticut and Maine to deliver additional testing capacity for frontline workers and patients and launch cutting-edge research in support of new scientific discoveries that will save lives.
2020 has also marked a call to action for JAX leadership to combat racial injustice and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across all facets of the laboratory. To that end, JAX has taken several steps to ensure it meets and exceeds standards of excellence in the organizational practice of DEI. Laboratory leadership is clear in its mission to create a climate of equity, inclusion, and understanding among its future and current staff, volunteers, and other key stakeholders—as well as all who are impacted by its research and discovery in a movement towards health equity. As part of that effort, the laboratory is in the process of hiring a director of equity, diversity, and inclusion to lead the development and implementation of proactive equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives in support of JAX values, culture, and strategic priorities.
JAX now seeks a passionate and accomplished fundraising leader to serve as its first diversity giving officer. This remote role will report directly to a new, dynamic vice president for advancement at the outset of his tenure. The diversity giving officer will join the advancement team at a highly opportune moment as JAX prepares to launch a comprehensive campaign in 2021. This individual will develop annual and ongoing strategies to solicit philanthropic support from individuals capable of gifts of $100,000 or more, in support of JAX priorities relative to diversity initiatives. Key diversity initiatives will focus on scientific research, education, and other key areas such as the recruitment, training, and retention of a more diverse workforce at JAX and across the biomedical research field, an enhanced focus on research that specifically targets and benefits underrepresented populations, and an improved capacity to address and eliminate health disparities and scientific bias.
The ideal candidate is a creative, focused, achievement-oriented individual who thrives in an entrepreneurial and team-oriented environment. The diversity giving officer must comfortably navigate conversations around race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other identities that have historically been used to disenfranchise groups of people; they will approach these topics with integrity and sensitivity, leading others to join them. JAX is deeply committed to recruiting candidates from historically marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds and identities, as well as individuals who embrace the values and practice of diversity, equity, and inclusion personally and professionally.
The diversity giving officer must have a minimum of five years of proven frontline fundraising experience, preferably at an academic, medical, healthcare, or research institution, with substantial direct experience soliciting, closing, and stewarding major or principal gifts. They must demonstrate excellent initiative and organizational skills to prioritize complex tasks, projects, and workflow, as well as strong independent judgment regarding best use of time. They must have exceptional interpersonal skills and flexibility to build confidence and trust with key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds including donors, trustees, executive leadership, scientists, and colleagues. A bachelor’s degree is required.
The diversity giving officer will spend considerable time out of the office cultivating and soliciting donors and principal gift prospects, often in collaboration with senior leadership and scientists. As such, this position may be remotely based, with the expectation of regular travel, once determined safe.
The Jackson Laboratory has retained Jack Gorman of Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment. All applications, inquiries, and nominations, which will remain confidential, should be directed to the search firm at the following link: www.imsearch.com/7690
