The Controller serves as a key role at the College and is responsible for the accounting, financial and tax reporting, fixed asset management, financial internal control operations, cash and restricted funds management and regulatory compliance with federal, state and local laws related to not-for-profits. The Controller manages a staff of four direct reports with responsibilities including general and grant accounting and accounts payable.  The position works collaboratively with and provides financial reporting to all departments across the campus.  The Controller works closely with student accounts, human resources and payroll, advancement (restricted gifts, annuities and endowments), and sponsored programs (grants), academic divisions and administrative offices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal and external reporting.
  • Act as the primary liaison with independent auditors to coordinate and manage the annual financial audit, single audit for federal and state grants, and employee benefit plan audit; prepare various schedules and gather and review information prepared by others required for these audits.
  • Direct and supervise the general accounting, grant accounting, and accounts payable staff.
  • Prepare and submits financial reports and other compliance requirements for federal and state grants.
  • Responsible for preparing data for the annual federal 990, 990-T, and related state tax filings and coordinating the completion, review, and submission of the filings with external tax preparers.
  • Complete and file other tax and compliance reports.
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system, accounting policies and procedures, chart of accounts, and a system of internal controls over accounting transactions.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely processing of all accounting transactions and accounting related processes, including accounts receivable, and gift grant transactions.
  • Approve, direct and control cash disbursements, including classification of all liege expenditures disbursed by accounts payable.
  • Manage operating bank relations and monitor debt levels including preparing and submitting compliance reports on debt covenants.
  • Assist in establishing and monitoring the annual budget.
  • Close and roll forward general ledger balances.
  • Supervise the maintenance of the college's fixed asset system and monitor the accounting and control of capital project and fixed asset recordkeeping.
  • Serve on college-wide committees for process improvement and strategic, tactical and operational initiatives.
  • Serve as Administrator for governmental online systems: G-5, Division of Payment Management, SAM, Federal Clearing house, EZ audit, Department of Defense, Veterans Administration or other granting agencies.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION

  • Requires education generally equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Business. A Master's Degree in a related field such as Management, Financial Accounting or Business is a plus but not required.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE

  • Requires a minimum of seven years of related professional experience, with at least five years of higher education and/or public accounting experience a plus.

REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES AND/OR LICENSURE

  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with employees, senior leaders, and faculty members.
  • Requires a high degree of integrity and professionalism.
  • Requires the ability to use a personal computer and Web browser, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel spreadsheets).
  • Requires knowledge of and the ability to use a variety of standard office equipment such as a telephone and computer keyboard.
  • Requires the ability to travel occasionally to complete college business.
