Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Department of Communication Studies at Sam Houston State University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin Fall semester 2021.
Where appropriate, the candidate will be expected to collaborate with colleagues to advance the research mission of Sam Houston State University through pursuit of internal and external funding, strategic development initiatives, and collaborative partnerships.
The department seeks to hire an interpersonal communication scholar. The successful candidate should be an empiricist with expertise in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methodologies. The candidate’s research interests could include topics such as, but are not limited to one or more of the following: intercultural communication, conflict communication, communication theory, environmental/science communication, human communication and technology, sport communication, deceptive communication, and relational communication.
The position will require teaching communication theory and research methods classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The teaching load is three courses per semester including graduate teaching.
The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching, and/or service as well as candidates who possess a deep interest in teaching.
Educational Requirements for the Position
Candidates should have a Ph.D. (in hand by August 2021) in Communication Studies, a record of conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications that strongly indicates future success in scholarly research, evidence of excellent teaching, a record of service, and the ability to teach courses that will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
Experience Required for the Position
University level teaching experience is desirable. Experience in online teaching is a positive qualification.

Our department offers both a BA and BS in Communication Studies and an online MA in Communication Studies with a strong interpersonal communication focus. The department prepares students for a variety of fields, including teaching at all levels, public advocacy, public relations, governmental relations, ministry, and law. The department also offers an innovative communication research lab that supports a variety of faculty research programs.
