Full-time Tenure or Teaching-Track Faculty Positions

The Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) cluster at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) seeks applicants for three open rank full-time tenure- or teaching-track faculty positions. Appointments will be made on an initial 3-year contract with the possibility of renewal.

Humanities

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a humanities discipline with a proven track record of effective teaching and research in any area of the humanities, broadly defined. The ideal candidate will complement and enhance our existing faculty strengths in literature, philosophy, and history. We particularly encourage applications from scholars who are engaged in interdisciplinary or comparative research and who have experience in broad-based humanities teaching focusing on multiple geographic areas and historical periods.

The successful candidate will (1) teach and develop our team-taught undergraduate humanities core course, an interdisciplinary, global texts course that draws on key works from a diverse range of cultural traditions from Europe and Asia; (2) design and deliver humanities elective courses in the candidate’s area of specialization; and (3) work with our specialist digital humanities faculty in developing digital student projects within humanities electives that can contribute towards our digital humanities minor program.

Digital Humanities

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a humanities-related discipline and should have demonstrated expertise in digital humanities teaching and research. We are eager to consider any applicants who can play a leading role in growing our digital humanities minor, a three-year program taken by students who are pursuing engineering, computer science, and architecture majors. Ideally, the chosen candidate will complement our existing strengths in digital literary studies, have sufficient training in computational methods to guide our technologically-minded students, and be able to foster collaborations with architecture, engineering and computer science faculty in the wider university.

The successful candidate will be required to teach our undergraduate humanities core course and co-teach the introductory course of our digital humanities minor program. Other duties will include developing new electives in the candidate’s area of specialization and working with other faculty on the humanities team to develop new programmatic initiatives in both the humanities and digital humanities.

Urban Studies and Policy

Applicants should have a focus on (spatial) data science, urban informatics, or other computational social science approaches to studying urban issues. Specific areas of interest may include urban network analysis, neighbourhood dynamics, housing, or the complex interrelations between technology and the city. An interest in Asian cities or comparative urbanism is desirable. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in statistical, data science, and or/machine learning methods and apply these methods with a critical perspective in the urban domain. The selected candidate will play a vital role in teaching computational methodology in the MSc in Urban Science, Policy and Planning (MUSPP) programme as well as contributing to SUTD’s interdisciplinary undergraduate education. This position is part of a broader university-wide focus on both ‘Cities’ and ‘Artificial Intelligence’.

The ideal candidate will complement and strengthen the HASS cluster and collaborate with colleagues across SUTD that work on similar topics from architecture, engineering, and computer science perspectives. Applicants should have expertise in urban spatial analysis or spatial data science. Candidates should hold a PhD in Urban Planning, Geography, Public Policy, Political Science, or related field and be active researchers with a commitment to interdisciplinary research collaborations. The successful candidate will strengthen the department’s teaching and research focus on urban issues and play a key role in managing and developing SUTD’s MUSPP Programme.
