Geoscience Manager - Digital Mapping Laboratory

Position Summary:
The Geoscience Manager for the Digital Mapping and GIS Laboratory (DML) of the Idaho Geological Survey (IGS) is stationed at the Moscow campus of the University of Idaho. The successful candidate will manage and oversee all aspects of the DML, leading the implementation and development of core capabilities of the lab including the production of map products and publications, web design, IT, and data management across a range of software and platforms. The Geoscience Manager will supervise the DML staff, which includes GIS Analysts and Digital Cartographers, and will assist professional staff with GIS-related applications, industry-grade subsurface modeling software, and remote sensing applications and will advise and assist with the development and integration of new technologies such as drones and other techniques. The incumbent will also oversee Information Technology contractors. Maintenance and purchasing of lab software and hardware as well as co-management of the IGS website and Windows network domain are additional responsibilities of the position. The successful candidate will proficiently interface with geologic staff on IGS research projects and provide technical revisions. Limited travel will be required as needed to attend professional or state meetings and for regular visits to the Boise office of IGS.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Geology, Earth and Environmental Sciences or closely related field.
• Three years of post-degree applied ArcGIS work experience with geologic and geospatial data (teaching experience at any level or graduate TA or RA assistantships are not counted as applied work experience. Postdoctoral experience in relevant fields will be considered up to 1 year).

• Using ESRI ArcGIS software applications
• Supervising and managing technical staff
• Interpreting and analyzing geologic maps
• Working in Applied Geology
• Understanding geologic maps and geologic mapping principles
• Editing and writing business correspondence and technical documents using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials
• Managing multiple projects concurrently
• Leading teams in a team-working environment
• Using computer software and applications for word processing, email, internet searches, and data organization
• Designing databases
• Applying programming languages to GIS applications
• Experience managing PC computer networks and servers
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass University of Idaho Defensive Driving course.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Map publication experience including publishing maps and other publications using ArcMap and Adobe Illustrator
• Proven knowledge and work experience with management of IT contractors
• Working knowledge of SQL database scripting language
• Working knowledge of computer IT systems including MS Active Directory and managing local domains
• Proven and advanced knowledge/work experience with Python programing
• Demonstrated experience with teaching GIS and database skills to technical staff
• Applied GIS/geology work experience with a state or federal geologic survey
• Proven experience with conducting geologic mapping
• Proven working experience with Lidar applications in the field of geology
• Ph.D. in Geology or closely related field with an emphasis in geospatial and GIS applications of geology.
• GIS Certificate or equivalent
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD software
• Direct supervision of geology, GIS, and digital cartographic staff

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Ability to carry and/or otherwise move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Requires occasional overnight travel.
