General Description/ Primary Purpose:
The Department of Biology within the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Florida (UNF) invites applications for a state-funded, tenure-track assistant professor position in bioinformatics. UNF is a Carnegie Community Engaged Institution located in Jacksonville, Florida and is home to six colleges and over 17,000 students. The Department of Biology at UNF has two main pillars of research focus, including an established Coastal and Marine Biology program and a newly initiated Biomedical Sciences program. This assistant professor position in bioinformatics will contribute to the expanding University-wide Biomedical Sciences program. In addition, there are numerous opportunities to establish collaborations with high profile regional biomedical research institutions in the greater Jacksonville area. The successful candidate will have first-hand experience in large-scale genomics/genetics/bioinformatics/big data analyses utilizing wet lab techniques and/or a relevant laboratory model system that is grounded in the study of human health and disease and integrates bioinformatic approaches. The ideal candidate will also be expected to develop an internationally recognized, vibrant, and well-funded, research program of exceptional caliber. Teaching responsibilities may include introductory level courses, an upper level course in bioinformatics, biochemistry, molecular cell biology, and courses in the area of specialty.

UNF strategically supports an aim to operate as a preeminent, vibrantly inclusive employer in higher education. The successful candidate should demonstrate a capacity to work among diverse constituencies in the immediate university community and beyond. UNF faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic excellence in all phases of instruction, research/scholarship/creative activity, and service.

A competitive salary and startup package commensurate with experience will be provided. Note: Applicants with research interests that are purely computational and do not employ a wet lab and/or model system that focuses on a human disease or health condition will not be competitive.

Required Qualifications:
• Ph.D. in molecular biology, cell biology, biotechnology, biology, biochemistry or a related discipline. Note: applicants with a graduate degree in an area outside of biology will not be competitive for this position.
• Commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses within the biology department curriculum.
• Strong commitment to mentoring and supervising undergraduate and graduate research students;
• Excellence in laboratory-based research demonstrated by a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals;
• Demonstrated potential to establish an independent research program.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Postdoctoral experience;
• Record of seeking extramural research support evidenced by proposal submission and/or receipt of funding awards.
