General Summary/Purpose
The Office of Pre-Professional Programs and Advising serves undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni of the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering pursuing professional education in medicine, other health professions, law, and business. Pre-Professional Advisors provideacademic advising, professional school application advising, and career counseling. The mission of the office is toencourage students to pursue a holistic approach to their education, to be reflective about their learning, and to demonstrate social responsibility and a commitment to service.
The Assistant Director assists students as they navigate pre-medical and pre-health requirements, select a major, and pursue experiences relevant to their career goals. The Assistant Director is an experienced advisor with strong counseling skills, an ability to lead students through careful self-assessment, clarify goals and interests, and make informed decisions. The Assistant Director mustalso be an inclusive, positive, hard-working team player who is proud to be part of the Hopkins family and wants students to succeed.
In addition, the Assistant Director must have very strong writing skills, as a central component of this position is the writing and editing of Committee Letters for applicants to medical/dental school and preparing letters of support for students applying to summer programs, internships, and scholarship programs. The position involves designing and implementing workshops and training seminars, serving as a liaison to key academic departments and schools, and establishing and cultivating relationships with admissions deans/directors at health professions schools. The office serves approximately 2500 undergraduates and alumni actively involved in considering professional school and 450 applicants to medical school annually.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
General Advising
- Advise students on all aspects of the pre-med/pre-health track, including course selection, pre-health requirements, and gaining relevant and meaningful experiences in clinical settings, community service, and research
- Advise students pursuing a range of health careers beyond pre-med, including dentistry, nursing, veterinary, physician assistant, etc.
- Communicate advising extensively and efficiently with students in person, virtually, and by email
- Serve as an advisor for pre-health clubs and student organizations on campus
- Support students applying to master’s, post-baccalaureate, and related programs
- Support
students in handling uncertainty and disappointment, and redefining
goals
Application and Committee Process
- Advise students regarding their readiness and the timing of their professional school application, and how to navigate the application process
- Write and edit Committee letters for medical/dental school applicants
- Read and edit personal statements
- Coordinate and present workshops pertaining to the application process
- Coordinate the Mock Interview Program for applicants
- Create and present new programming to build resources for all students
- Serve as co-lead for the Pre-Health Peer Mentoring Program
- Oversee all MD-PhD programming
- Develop workshops focused on academic transition issues and participate in small group advising for students at various stages of their undergraduate education
- Coordinate programs to enhance awareness and knowledge of varied health professions fields
- Coordinate
admissions visits for allopathic, osteopathic, dental, and other
health profession schools
- Participate in advising initiatives with the Office of Academic Advising and other campus advising offices
- Represent the office in special programs planned by the office and/or in conjunction with other offices, including Admissions, Life Design Lab, Orientation, Post-bac Premedical Office, and more
- Assist in the management of office communications, including the eNewsletter, the Pre-Professional website, Facebook, and other social media
- Represent Johns Hopkins University to the admissions offices of health professions schools and professional associations, both as an advocate for the Hopkins program as well as an advocate for applicants
- Assist in collaborative efforts with the Center for Student Success to build community for FLI and URM students that includes academic support, mentoring and career exploration
Minimum Qualifications(Required)
- Master’s degree
- Three (3) years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications
Three to five years of experience working with students in an advising/counseling capacity and a master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or related field.
Preference is for academic advising and/or pre-professional advising experience.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
